Repairing bumper damage

Post by isisalar »

Hi guys, a happy new year to you all.
The Silver HDI exclusive Estate has managed to escape any major body damage for nearly 170,000 miles until I nudged the rear bumper a bit too hard against a tree christmas eve, and a piece of paint about 2" square has come off and some surrounding has lifted. I've no problem making good with 2 pack filler and I can spray fairly well, but I've never done any work on a car so any advice would be much appreciated. I'm really annoyed with myself because up to now as far as I know all the paintwork is factory original.
Can anyone say how the paint is available, do Citroen sell aerosols or small quantities, and is it a base colour and laquer system? How does metallic paint need to be treated, constant stirring? Is it solvent or water based?
Completely coincidentally I had to paint some bannisters from dark stain to white last week so invested £60 in one of these DIY grade HVLP outfits and saved about 2 days labour.

I was astonished how good it was for the money and I'd have no qualms about using one for painting a whole car if necessary, easily as good as a compressor or airless system costing thousands and possible to get a first class finish. Minimal overspray too.
How much of a job is it to get the bumper off, is it just a plastic cover?
Is the paint code on the car somewhere?
Anyone got a silver estate rear bumper in good condition?
Is it likely that my wife's 02 plate Saxo is the same colour? If it is I'll practice on it, LOL.
Not looking forward to doing this with no workshop, other than my parents garage, which I'm sure was designed for a model T ford, could do it removed in there ok though.
Cheers
Paul

For most recent Citroens, although it can be in a different door shut occasionally.
Yours may be under the bonnet though, on the inner wing or firewall.
