xantia front hubs... 2 sorts; what's the difference?

Post by pseud »

Folks, it's getting late so I best stop searching the forum ask my Q and get to bed!

Long story short.
Needed to replace Xantia s2 (1999) Exclusive 2l 16v front wheel hub carriers - someone sometime did something strange, or perhaps the garage did and it's just the bearing that duff. Who knows, something weird has happened.

So, picked up a s/h hub-carrier, bearing and hub unit to replace - it was from an Activa.

Stuck the replacement unit on, and... the hubs are bigger. Looking through the online manual, there's 2 different units (Activa, V6, HDi diesel and blown diesel and petrol seem to take the bigger hub; the 2l 16v Exclusive seems to be in the small hub camp). But, both take the same bearing - so, that means the whole the bearing goes in must be the same on both and so it is only the hubs that are bigger? That's what assumed, and have started along the track of swapping the old Exclusive hub over to the replacement Aciva hub-carrier (with new bearing along the way).

BUT, I've been looking at this Activa carrier, and got out the callipers. The Activa carrier actually looks to be a "heavier" construction. The dimensions between various points are the same, but the size of the ribbing and general weight of construction seem heavier. Can someone confirm this and perhaps shed some light on whether I need to go back to square 1 and get hold of a smaller carrier? The hub-carrier itself isn't listed as a seperate part in the online manual, it only comes a complete unit with hub, bearing and lower ball joint - so, it's not possible to see if there are 2 different types of hub-carrier.

Anybody know where I can pick up a hub-carrier unit with bearing and smaller hub intact?

Thanks all - happy New Year!
Morgan.

I know HDi 110 hubs are wider for the wider track. I know this a when I replaced a hub after a garagebotched a bearing replacement I ordered a second hand hub only to find it wouldn't fit as it was too narrow! The breakers sent the right one eventually. Unfortunately I scrapped the incorrect one a few months ago otherwise you could have had it.

Isn't the main reason for the two sizes of hubs the small and large discs of different models ? Eg V6, HDi and late Activa all have much larger discs and pads than the earlier/lower spec models. All S2 cars have the wider track so I don't think that's a factor.

Ian, bugger! Did you get a chance to form an opinion on the whether the 2 carriers were different while you had them both in your possession?

Mandrake, intrestinger and inrestinger - that would suggest that the hub carriers are the same and the hubs only are different?

Thanks,
M.

if you send me the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No. o will check what should be on your car,
and do an all families search to try and work out what modells/years had what

Mandrake, not sure all S2s have wide track? I realised I had a larger hub because when I screwed the hub nut on it only went flush with the end of the drive shaft, so at lest 10mm or so short of the hole for split pin/ spring clip. That would give the Activa that much extra a wider track?

A differences between the two hub carriers seems to be the strengthening ribs running along the extension to the steering ball-joint and round the back of the bearing housing - on the mine they're about 7.1mm and on the Activa hub carrier it's about 8.5mm, but like I said the dimensions between points seem the same. If the hub carrier is heavier, this would change the suspension dynamics?

Intrigued to get to the bottom of this; intrigued to find another hum assembly...

pm. sent

the part No.'s for your front hubs complete are

3646.42= N/S
3647.42= O/S

they are only listed under your chassis No. as a complete unit, as you had already discovered,

but the same part No. on pug service box, shows in the exploded drawing the hub carrier as a separate part, even though they come up with the same price, under cit or pug,

below is fitment lists of both types/part No.'s covering all MK2 XANY's

2 part No.'s each for left and right
