What are the symptoms of a bad power steering RAM ?

You might do better if you describe what symptoms you're experiencing and see if they match your the suspicion of a power steering problem, rather than asking all of the possible ways that power steering ram might fail and what the symptoms would be!

On lightly rough road the steering wheel turns from side to side. I also have a Citroen C4 that in the same road the steering wheel does not turn.

Two completely different cars and completely different pas systems. Yes they are both rack and pinion but the xantia is mechanical pas amd hydraulic syspension which is what I THINK causes the wheel "rock" .. i know exactley what you mean i get it on mine.. and the c4 is electric pas with no hydraulic suspension.. if not then a possible track rod joint worn or bottom ball joint??
