BE3 gearbox Bolt locations??

Post by Timmo »

Hi guys,
just for curiosity's sake i thought i best check the gearbox mounting bolts aftre discovering the lower one had Fallen out, i had a look where i think there should be bolts but i appear to have Holes!!! i'm a little concerned that they have worked loose and fallen out???

Should there be a bolt in the oily area hole??? (looking down on the Top of the engine form the front the car, Gear rods at the back)
Image

and should there be a bolt in here?? - where the spot of light is?? (looking down the front of the engine from the top)
Image

from what i can find there are only 4 bolts that hold it on, 3 over the top and front and the one at the back by the diff, i'm a bit concerned that there were non bolts holding it on!!!

there are/should be 4 large bolts holding the box to the engine, two at the top sort of in line with the bottom corners of the cylinder head,
then one at the front going into the crank case just above the back end of the pressure regulator, and the fourth one at the rear bottom of the box/enginenext to the drive shaft,

In a STRAIGHT answer to your Q Timmo, YES the rings are the bolt holes!!

In your first pic, there SHOULD be bolts in those holes!! Long bolts with a 16mm Hex Head, and the one down the back of the engine location near the drive shaft should me a M8 ALLEN Head bolt..

Right, I somehow had a long (looked Too long) bolt 17mm head and the right thread, and fashioned another up from threaded bar with 2 nuts locked for a head, have put them both in, the last remaining bolt thats Hidden under the plastic pipe holding gubbins by the airbox is still there, so seems that there was One bolt left holding the box On!   is due to be Wet tomorrow so will leave the investigating the tightness of that one till it stops! Will also nip up the yard and grab some Proper bolts before the school breaks up end of the week!
Now, thinking back to when it all went wrong, there was a clonk as I pulled away which would most likely be one pof the bolts going, bottom one id say, and when nearly home I heard something rattle off and hit the bulkhead which would have been the top rear most, - wouldnt be surprised if its sat by the curb up the road! I would assume that was caused by the vibrations from the box trying to Fall off!
Blimmen Lucky escape I think!

Thanks for the help guys, is Very much appreciated!

It wouldnt actually physically fall off because the upper gearbox mount would sort of hold them together, THOUGH they would possibly "Sag" and possibly bend the input shaft or wear and destroy the input shaft bearing... So falling off wouldn;t actually happen... just more damage..

Yes, I had thought that it wouldnt Actually fall off as such as technically the driveshafts would hold it in? But the prospect of the last bolt coming loose could cause a few issues! Mostly in a damage caused resulting in not worth fixing kinda way?
Gotta say though, Thick Ol' driveshafts on the td mind! hurt when they slip off the lower arm its wedged on and Smack you in the Face! :-D

Can't remember if the starter motor bolts pass through/into the gearbox bell-housing? If so, they should help stop the gearbox parting compnay with the block
