After killing one key the replacement has now died. I've located the issue. The microswitch pins need resoldered. I can see why this happens the pressing of the switch over time flexes the pins and weakens the solder joint.
Any ideas? After resoldering I thought about supporting the switches with resin to stop them moving when pressed.

Re: series 1 Xantia keys
Just build up the solder a bit more into a fillet when you resolder them and make sure the switch body is resting against the board properly so the solder isn't taking all the strain.
Like many PCB's the original quantity of solder is too small and thin to provide enough mechanical strength.
I resoldered my S1 fob like this and it was still working perfectly 4 years later when the car was sold.

Re: series 1 Xantia keys
I've resoldered various joints on the plipper, at different times, but it's not been 100% successful - just had another go. I'm wondering if the contacts in the micrswitch have become a bit iffy. Anyone actually replaced the microswitches?
Slightly related, but I had to replace a very similar microswitch in the toaster not long ago. Admittedly in that case, it's very exposed to the heat from the toaster's elements.

Re: series 1 Xantia keys
I recently got a repair kit for the Saxo plipper on e bay for about a tenner. Comprised of a new case, new battery and two micro switches. Should be able to get one for the Xantia I'd think.
Cheers

Re: series 1 Xantia keys
Well it's fixed
I have re-soldered the four pins (and replaced the batteries) and it's now working fine. For how long remains to be seen.........
