I have been quoted horrendous amounts of moneys to (£800) to replace (includes the DMF)
I cant afford that with the run up to Christmas.

Its slipping a tad in 3rd and 4th as the turbo spools up, and its difficult to put it into reverse or first, on cold start.
its difficult to put a time/mileage on a failing clutch, even more so as it has a DMF,
although as its getting hard going into 1at and reverse, i would think its almost kaput
a lot of people are replacing the DMF with the conversion kit back to a solid flywheel,

Won't a xantia flywheel fit? DMFs are to smooth out diesel engines and make then more petrol like. Many swear by solid flywheel conversions but I've heard stories of snapped cranks because of the unusual vibrations that resulted, this was on ford diesels however.
Can you get a labour only quote from a garage? I bought my own parts and had a friend do the work, i bought the clutch, DMF and slave cylinder at carparts4less for just over £300 and paid £330 for the labour. Funnily enough a solid flywheel conversion was £50 more than the DMF so i reasoned i'd be fine with the proper flywheel as the OE one lasted 111k. If you Google "carparts4less discount codes" you can find codes for an additional 5-10% off, depending on how lucky you are. Don't be tempted to just buy the clutch and hope the DMF is ok because its almost certainly toast or will break up 5k miles later meaning the box has to come out again, the same applies to the slave cylinder which is only £20.

The dmf v smf argument rages on accross forums of all makes and never comes to a definitive conclusion. As the smf conversion is no cheaper I can't see the point of it in your case. The aim of a dmf is to smooth out vibration, nothing else, apart from making LUK and Valeo huge amounts of money.
How long the clutch will last depends entirely on how you drive it, it only wears when its slipping so if you can bear to drive it gently enough for it not to slip it will last almost indefinitely. One of my XMs started to slip the clutch at about 2000 rpm on full throttle, I stopped letting it slip and it was still driveable when I sold it about 20k later.
Sounds like it's not only slipping, but dragging as well. I once had a 2.1 Peugeot engined Granada on which the clutch started dragging. Got two days out of it before it disintegrated.
Don't plan any long journeys.
As Peter N said, could go on for thousands of miles but modern day clutches do tend to break up long before the plates are completely worn out.

Have you looked at dealer prices? On Citroen.co.uk under owner services you will find some fixed price deals for older cars. Not all dealers participate but if there is a good one near you that does you might find it less than, a non dealer.

Supremely optimistic! I've never come accross a main dealer who will do a clutch on ANY vehicle for a reasonable price. It's just not in their DNA. When they hear the word clutch they think you've just told them to rebuild the car.

I don't see this myself, I have driven 2.1 XMs for about 15 years, they don't have a DMF but are a much smoother engine at low revs than either of the DMF equipped 2.0. Hdi's I have, any suggestions?
