Citroen Berlingo - New Clutch?

Post by jono_h »

Vehicle is a 2004 Berlingo 1.4 manual. 79k miles.

I was struggling with a stiff and sticky pedal, so put a new cable on which has helped. Biting point was right near the floor, and still is - in fact its getting difficult to get it into gear.

Am I in the realms of needing a clutch? I'm happy to spend the money, but want to make sure there isn't something silly I've missed.

Thanks for yourhelp,

Jon

But not if the release bearing is chewing its way through the pressure plate.... Rather suspect new clutch is required.

79k is about the limit for a 1.4 berlingo clutch anyway, but second the comment about release bearing chewing through the pressure plate. That's the way most Citroen/peugeot clutches go.

While you're here - if one were to assemble a "kit" from separate parts rather than buy it all in a box together, can a more advantageous (longer lived, smoother) combination be achieved for this driveline?

i was told by a motor factors once, if i purchased the/a clutch plate on its own, there supplier would not guarantee it

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone.

I've taken the plunge and booked it in for a new clutch. I'll report back on Tuesday!

Just a quick final update, in case anyone has a similar issue.

Apparently there wasn't a lot left of the release bearing, which had 'rotted away'. New clutch kit fitted, and all gears available!

Quotes received were;

Mr Clutch - £279 (not great reviews, and possibly use remanufactured clutches)
Local independants - £440, £504 and £511 (all brand new 3 piec kits)
Main Dealer - £637

All inc VAT, near Farnborough, Hants.

The only one of those quotes that seems reasonable is the Mr Clutch one, although your comments are not far out. A genuine clutch kit for your vehicle is available for under £80, and the job is a very straightforward 3 hour change. Obviously the main dealer will be by far the most expensive, but I'm surprised to see quotes of over £500 from independent outfits.
