O no! Leaking diesel injectors on XUD9 and other questions

Post by aerodynamica »

I was looking too closely at the engine while it was running during the ABS fault finding. I now notice that No.s 3 and 4 cylinder diesel injectors appear to be leaking combustion gas via their seats. I'm concerned it's heading for a failure - what can i do about this? Is the sealing done by a crushed washer or is the injector itself beginning to slacken?

It still starts/ runs ok seemingly but I feel it is going to get worse.

Second question: what would make the sound of the turbo become less? Seems a silly question but there's no noticeable drop in performance - boost is still very 'XUD like' but I notice the previously audible turbo sound is almost inaudible now - I always enjoy the sound of it pulling away with the window half down.

I checked the simple conections from the intercooler etc and all seem tight.

XUD injectors are not normally difficult to remove, then its just a matter of cleaning the injectors and their seats and fitting new copper washers. You could try pulling the injectors down a bit but you will probably have to replace the seals.

If the turbo is quieter but the performance hasn't dropped off, either it has mysteriously balanced itself or you are going deaf. I jest not, if the noise has lessened over a period of time it could be that your high frequency hearing had dropped off, it happens with age and its happened to me.

Quo 9 times, AC/DC twice, Metallica, Guns'n'Roses (the original lot), ZZ Top.. nothing was as loud as Quo at Hammersmith this March though.
