ABS on series one Xantia

Post by aerodynamica »

Hi all, yonks ago someone posted up a picture of the ABS ecu connector pins and annotated which one was for each wheel sensor connection.

Would anybody have this diagram?

Help greatly appreciated!!

In my limited experience, an intermittent ABS fault will usually be diagnosed as the O/S/F front sensor. It's unlikely to be the sensor itself :) but a poor connection - first suspect is pin1 of the plug/socket at the ABS ECU. The cable to the Plug rises vertically before turning through 90° into the plug. Consequently, with time the cable tends to lever the plug out of the socket - opening the water seal a crack. As the ECU is on the front inner wing, it's very vulnerable to spray - enough said. Contact cleaner to remove the verdigris, then washed clean with plenty of WD40 or similar. A long cable tie will hold the plug and socket firmly sealed.

That's it for sure James! Thanks.

I also think it's a connector but the ABS fault isn't intermittent now, it's constant: from ignition on in the morning the test light is on and stays on. In the first instance it lights and you can see it flicker a little and as far as I know this is the three steps of the ABS test where it checks: ECU-Relay-wheel sensors in that order. I can count two flickers of the light where it stays on thereafter - I'm certain it used to flicker three times and go out. I think this means it isn't passing the last check for the wheel sensors.

The other thing is that the rear hub 'crown' rotors look like they could do with a clean up of corrosion so maybe this also contributes?

Anyway, thanks for the link - I want to check here first then to each sensor connector.

Thanks guys,

Graeme

You are right Old-Guy! I get a resistance reading at all of the wheel sensors except the off side front which reads as open circuit so will be having a good look at that soon. Thanks for everyone's help

Right I've disconnected the sensor at the Off side front and checked it there- still open circuit from the connector to the sensor so I think the sensor has had it. The sensor mounting looks in terrible condition to so no idea how I'll get it off

Plenty of Plus Gas, and Percy Wotsits (and time). I would also recommend getting a good quality sensor (I used a cheap one, and it failed again within a year).

Nope, it shouldn't be that bad. Get hold of some Plus Gas (WD40 won't help here), spray some daily onto the bolt (enough to soak in), and after a week it should come loose quite easily (unless you have already tried and rounded off the head!). Plus Gas advertises itself as "Dismantling Fluid", and it isn't wrong.

Hi thanks but the nut is so corroded that it is not looking like a nut any more - I was more concerned with the bit of the sensor that is fitted through the hub carrier - looks like a lot of contact area..

Anyway I have an aerosol of plus gas but it's soon to run out, I'll get some as soon as I find a source.. EBay again probably

On a Series 2 Xantia it is a bolt. You can get Plus Gas from Euro Car Parts (although Citronut hates ECP, with good reason).

On a Series 2 Xantia the sensor fits into a C shaped hole. I broke one sensor getting it out, but as it had failed, and I could get a narrow blade in there I was able to get the remains out. I cleaned that area up, but I did not add any grease as I did not want to cause any future damage to the new sensors.

You might also want to have a good look at the reluctor rings, as they do fail. The rings are fitted onto the drive shaft, and as corrosion builds up the ring is expanded until it cracks. Both the reluctor rings on Gracie required replacing.

All xantia be it series one or two have the C cup at the front.. but series one sensors have a metal outer shield around the body... i use some mole grips after getting the bolt out and just twist ease the sensor out. its not a shaft out job by any means..

Try hammering a smaller socket over the head of the bolt to get it out... might be your only choice.. or if you remove the disk cut the bolt head off get the sensor out and use mole grips.. actually try mole grips before cutting any bolts.

Ps s2 sensors ARE different to s1 and not compatible..

Came out a treat! I had feared the worst- waiting on the new part arriving and hopefully the ABS light going out now.

The removed sensor was split at the sensor end and the plug end

Dont be tooo disheartend when you put the new sensor on and light stays on, you MIGHT need to go over 5 mph before the light goes out...
