C5 blower burn-out

Post by Tully »

Hi Folks

I have a recurring problem with my C5 2.2 hdi fan blower.
The connectors for the blower keep melting meaning no fan and fogged up windows.
I've used a local auto electrician twice who has replaced different connectors with heavy duty connector block but now it has happened again :x , probably somewhere hidden deep inside the dashboard.
Can anyone make any suggestions about how to overcome this pain in the backside?

Thanks
Craig

Have you replaced the fan ? A faulty fan that is for example partly seized may draw a lot more current than normal, if a more beefy replacement connector has also melted excessive current drain is really the only likely cause.

Hi Mandrake. The replacement connectors are holding out, it's the feeble standard Citroen ones that are melting one at a time. As for replacing the fan, now you mention it, it does squeal slightly on medium settings, maybe not turning as freely as it should. Is replacement an easy job?

The blower motor will draw high current if the pollen filter is blocked.
It's tucked high up at the front of the centre console, on the passenger's side.

Thanks Clogzz.
I've been researching to see how easy it is to change the filter and it doesn't look too difficult. Maybe I can whip out the fan motor itself and hit it with some spray lubricant as well. By the way, what is item number 3 in your diagram? it looks like a filter as well....

Er.... not Clogzz :-D

Had similar problems with this fan on my Xantia, poor quality Citroen connector were to blame. Decent replacements sorted the issue. Incidentally the fan on mine draws 20A when running full speed so quite understandable that connectors were getting hot.

There is the "Useful Links" forum that is tailor made for such items. It would indeed be great to have such a collection of photo's and drawings all in one place.
There is such a phenomenal amount of useful information on the forum it would be nice to organise it as a database - which it is, I suppose, but lacking the 'organise' part. The information, though somewhat organised into forums is still rather disparate and many questions are repeated endlessly.

On the other hand it wouldn't do to have Citropaedia and miss out on all the peripheral chat that makes this place what it is.
