reservoir leak

Hi, my 1996 Xantia TD. The top of the LHM reservoir seems to be leaking a small amount of fluid. I guess there is a seal on the top? would cleaning it resolve the leak or do I need to change the seal? thanks inadvance Terry.

Wouldn't worry too much about it. Have you topped up LHM recently and it's a touch above maximum? You need to check the LHM level with the suspension set to max height

That's what I thought, until I changed the rubber seal around the riser. Not only does it not dribble there anymore I can actually inflate the tank slightly like a balloon by blowing into the breather hose in the filler cap, showing that the tank is now air tight aside from the breather.

Of course any leaks from the return hoses will dribble onto the top as well, but it is possible to have a dry leak free tank top if the hoses are leak free and the rubber seal is changed.

Is a little bit of oil on the top of the tank something to worry about though ? Not really. I only replaced the seal because I had the riser out to perform a modification in the tank and lexi had given me a seal with the car which he'd ordered but never fitted, so I thought I might as well fit it.

Interesting and useful, Simon - I'd better quickly order a new seal (for the Green Lady) before it becomes NFP!

My own trick is to keep the LHM level a little above half-way between the marks.

The main problem with the plastic tank is that one side of the top is less well supported than the other. I fitted a support ring cut, I think, from 110mm plastic waste pipe which keeps the top square, and which improved the leakage markedly. Unfortunately I can't find what the height was, and it does need to be fairly exact and parallel to work. It needs to be split vertically to get it in and to allow free flow of fluid.

i would have thought if your concerned about the messy tank top, you could just re/profile the securing rod/clamp, so it holds the riser down more firmly
