From bitter experience I'd recommend replacing the entire top mount as well as the thrust bearing.

You can guess what happened when I only replaced the bearing on mine. ..

the top mount is in very good condition, the car is 12 year old but i'd guess the mount isn't and has been changed previously

Having repaced these top bearings X2 on my son's 2000 Pug 306 it seems to me that they are designed to fail. They consist of a marginally lubricated crude ball race with thin pressed metalparts. Salt and moisture exposure under the wheel arch soon take their toll and they rust up and produce characteristic creaking noises when the wheels are steered.
I got replacements off ebay for half the price quoted above (presumably Citroen prices)

I hope you bought two bearings - in my experience they both failed within a few months of eachother.

They make creaking or cracking noises, or in my case, a weird metallic rattling when going over roughish roads (but oddly not speed bumps). The roads, especially the kerb side around here are so rough that in the last 3 years, my Berlingo has had a 2 new passenger side strut tops and bearings, a spring, droplink, a strut and a bottom arm and bushes. The right hand side has had nothing.

i only checked mine as i could hear a weird noise coming from the strut spring, it turns out when u turn the wheel the spring will follow the shock round so far stop then jump back round, its like its catching on something.

Maybe the balls have created indentations in the bearing surfaces, so the rotational movement is no longer smooth?
