Urgent help please

Post by imperial21 »

Hi
I have a Saxo 1.1 2001, I have been doing up , I wanted to check the timing belt was ok so i wipped the top cover off and was turning the engine over by the cam pulley, I know you should nt do that and i think i maybe learning why.
the car would nt start and i couldnt work out why, i have now taken the belt covers off and i think the timing maybe out, I am stuck on where the crank timing marks are the cam i can see and have put a 6mm allen key in it, I know there is a hole behind the oil filter which i believe goes into the flywheel but i cant find any notch in the flywheel does the crank pulley have any marks ? I have put a long allen key in plug 4 ( Crank end) looking for tdc The haynes manual says it worked out from tdc on 4. When the long allen key sticks up on 4 (tdc) the cam pulley is out a bit.

I hope you can understand my ramble.
I also hope the engine is ok !!!

cant remember if the TU lump has the small raised square just above the crank sprocket, as all the TU's i have done ( quite a few ), i have done the full job, without jacking up and removing the O/S front wheel,

if it does have the raised block as the XU/D's do, you line up the rear edge of the crank sprocket woodruf key with the front edge of the raised block,
this will bring the crank within a gnats do da of the locking peg in the flywheel lining up,

also be aware the crank rotates twice for evey full turn of the cam!!!,

as you say if you have worked out were TDC is, i would now gently turn the engine over ( clockwise ) by the crank pulley center bolt!!!,
till the cam locking peg drops into its locating hole in the head,
now just rock the crank forwatd and backwards very very sightly till the flywheel peg drops into the hole in the back of the flywheel,

just hope you have not cranked the engine over with the cam timing out to far #-o :yikes: :teabag:

Sadly i think i killed the valves, i have put the belt right i think, by hand spins over very easy, I did a compression check and it had nothing on any cylinder, i was surprised as i thought i might get that on 2 cylinders not all 4. so now i will keep an eye for a cheap head or sell spares or repair !!

TU petrol engines DO bend valves as they are at an inclined angle.

Ive got a 1.4 TU head on a Saxo 1.4 Im breaking... Runs and drives. But needs too much. Id consider selling the head.

I dont know the 1.4 TU Inside out but Im only guessing that the 1.4 valves are all the same as the 1.1 engine...

If i remember rightly the engine code of mine is HF which is slightly different TU, I will check if it may fit. I did know that the tu engine does hit its valves but as i said i was surprised it took all 4 cylinders.

it will take all valves out as the cam belt stayed in place, so the crank and the cam continued to rotate out of synch.

i also have a TU head from an AX, this one was overhauled ready to go on a bottom end, we started talking it down to find some striped head bolt threads in the block,

so we stuck our spare lump on complete,

can remember if it were a 998cc or 1.1, but i think there is not much if any difference in the smaller engines heads

It does indeed and make sure you use good ones. I had some eBay specials once that stretched too much, i think you can guess what the end result was.

Make sure when you change the head that you get the right one. Your engine being a 2001 should be a MultiPoint head so the injectors go straight into the head. Earlier 1.1 heads (including AX's Sorry Malcolm) had SinglePoint Injection so there is no space for the injectors.

I think the heads are different between 1.1 and 1.4 but an engine swap might be an easier option. All of the engine swaps on Saxo's are a piece of cake

also mind the pisron liners protrude the correct amount, otherwise you will not be able to stop the coolant going straight into the combustion chambersv :yikes: , then out the exhaust   ,
also mind you blow/clean any coolant/oil out of the head bolt thread ways in the block,
