Xantia S2 Tyres

Post by Woody260 »

My Xantia 2.0HDi Estate of 1999 vintage whizzed through it's MOT today, but there were 2 advisories. Both of which I suspected would be flagged, the front tyres are getting close to the legal limit, so they need replacing very soon. They are 205-60-15. I can't afford new Michelin's etc, so I wondered whether with all the Xantia experience in this forum, what budget tyre..if any..would you recommend? I do very little annual mileage, no more than 3000, and like my trusted steed. I'm getting on in years, so no wannabe racing driver :-), but because of the suspension type, want to try and fit a tyre that doesn't affect the handling adversely.
Alternatively, 3 good used tyres would be good (the spare's seen better days) Thanks

I know there are many who would argue against it and the four patches of rubber on the road is all there is between you and oblivion so always fit new but I now only buy 2nd hand tyres. Many of these are coming over from the continent and are available because people over there switch between summer and winter tyres because of the time of year not because the tyres are worn out. I have found a good place that charges a standard £25 per tyre for 15” wheels. For years I would only put new tyres on my cars but for the last couple of years I have had more punctures than I had in the previous 20 years. I put this down to one of the industrial estates I work on that seems to have all manner of screws and nails liberally distributed over its roads and car parks. After a few new tyres falling foul of punctures in non repairable places I decided to go the used tyre route.

Now the place I go lets me thoroughly inspect the tyres before they are fitted and so far they have all been good; usually with 6 – 7mm of tread (new they are about 8 so 60 – 70% life left). Again I appreciate that while punctures, slashes and bulges are easy to spot internal damage may not be. However, how many people if they bought a new (to them) car with four nearly new tyres on it would instantly get them all changed, or get a new tyre if they have encountered a kerb or pot hole? They generally have Continental, Michelins, Goodyear and Dunlop and having run new budgets previously I have noticed the difference for having some premium boots on. I have experienced some funny wear patterns with Goodyears on Xantias in the past so tend to go for Michelins or Dunlop both of which seem to suit the car. Not tried Continentals because they’ve not had a pair of the right size and/or tread depth when I’ve needed them so I’m not in a position to comment.

At the end of the day you pays your money and you takes your choice, it’s about risk assessment and risk management. In my view I have found a good supplier and can have used premium boots which are better than new budget boots. Yes I would love to be able to fit brand new Michelins every time but the cost is prohibitive, if you can that’s great but unfortunately that is not currently my world.

Thanks for your comments Rory. That makes sense regarding using good used tyres. I've done that in the past myself, but never on a Xantia, mainly because of the possible detrimental handling and ride. I used to travel considerable distances in my previous one, but since retiring I no longer go that far generally, but I do still use motorways, and so want to be sure that I'm on good rubber, as it were. I phoned around a few local (Woodford, Essex)tyre places today, to see if they had any good used in stock. But none did, hence considering new ones as well now.

I find that recently good part worn tyres have been very difficult to find, no idea why.

I think because more and more people are cottening on and using them. Maybe I've just got lucky and found a good supplier. having said that I do have a spare set of wheels and buy tyres when he has them rather than only at the time I need them.

i've got 4 different tyres on the barge at the mo, one a Michelin, ones an avon, ones somethjing id never heard of, and a knackered nexen being replaced tomorrow with a tyre I got from ebay for a fiver! Handling wise its been fine, was getting on the edge of letting go the othjer week on the coast road but then I realised I was pushing on at the same if Slightly more than usual motorway speeds! :-O as above, I used to be a new and premium tyre man! (the Show me the Logo michelin ad always made me smile! ) but a good budget one is acceptable on the wagon as its hardly used now!
i've a mate who runs a wheel refurbers and tyre side, he used to get the tyres in but the xantia size are difficult to get hold of now,- hence grabbing one local from ebay! The local yard when I asked said that 15's are generally 15-20 a tyre, so have another place to look! ;-)
Ebays worth a look local to you,

I have always used budget tyres since you could get them, probably 40 years or more and have never had a problem and am not averse to using secondhand ones, if you drive in a sensible manner you don't need super road hugging tyres, for the boy racers out there I would suggest grippy tyres but I have survived something approaching 1,000,000 miles without them, I buy for comfort rather than grip. Nexen tyres were mentioned by someone, they give about the best ride that I can obtain locally for a reasonable price but not the longest life although they are not bad.

A careful examination of used tyres both inside and out should reveal any faults.

I found Goodride tyres suited the Xantia.
Quiet, comfortable, decent life, and reasonable grip for budget tyres, but amongst the cheapest available.

I appreciate your comments Gents, they are helpful. Like one or two of you have said, these 205 60 15's are getting a bit thin on the ground, over the last couple of days I've done a lot of searching, inc Fleabay & ringing around tyre shops and even two scrappies that are local, well one is at least...not sure which are rarer, the size of tyre I'm looking for, or scrap yards! 10 or more years ago there were lots around, (Scrap Yards that is) but tightened up legislation has culled those dramatically

I guess it's not going to be that easy to find what I'm after..3 tyres of that size, of which I do want 2 that are matching, as they're going on the front end. Alternatively, I'll go the budget route. A tyre shop a few miles away are doing new Hankook 866's a £50 a tyre, any thoughts on those?
I've also had a look for the Goodride's as suggested by dnsey, but can't locate any stockists in this or surrounding areas.

If anyone knows of a Xantia S2 HDi Estate about to make it's final journey, and that has good boots..I'd be very interested :!: !!

Take a look in the scrappies for C5s. My previous Xantia used 205s, and I was able to get some good tyres from a scrapped c5.

Cheers Hell Razor, will add that to my enquiry tasks. The only problem with living on the NE London outskirts is that the local scrappies we all knew and used in the past, are almost extinct in this area. I've also got, and have had for many years, an 1984 Mercury Cougar which I need gone, for restoration or scrap maybe, there used to be lots of breakers that specialised in American cars, now I can only find about 3 in all of the UK :-(

A lot of yards used to be on the outsides of towns, but with expansion soon became In the towns, land prices for such go up and up, legislation gets stronger and yards start dissapearing!
Luckily for me, the one in the village still allows you to walk around it!

Some XMs use 195.65.15s, on the same wheels, they have the same rolling radius are more popular and give a more comfortable ride.
