Thumping from rear n/s suspension

Hi,
'98 306 estate xud variety.

I've recently started to notice that the rear near side suspension seems to thump/bang when that wheel goes over e.g. a broken bit of road, pot hole etc. This is notably different from other corners, where you feel the broken road surface but generally things are quiet. It's almost as if there is something in the boot which is bouncing around (but there isn't).

i haven't really investigated this but wondered if anyone had experienced this or could suggest a likely cause. I'm not faimiliar with the suspension set up on the car but wiondered if a failed shock absorber would cause this? Could it be more serious?

sub frame mounting broken away

Oh dear, that sounds pretty serious! How can I check that this is the case, and is it repairable? Easily/cheaply?

there are 4 rear sub frame mounts, two at the front end and two at the tail end,

the later are very very easy to check/replace, and the forward pair are not much harder,

uf you send me the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No., i will get you price and part No.'s from service citroen

if the price is a bit steep you can either do a gooooogly search with the part No.'s, or aim them at the likes of GSF

Ok, the last 8 numbers of the VIN are 32480617.

Would it make sense to do both sides at the same time?

A google search has turned up what appear to be the correct parts. A full rear axle set can be got off ebay for £39.99, or at the other end of the scale through Euro car parts for about £100 for a full set. Do these things come in different qualities and what should I be looking for ideally?

i personaly would steer well clear of the company selling for £100,

i have had sub slandered parts from them at extortionate cost IMO

i just did a gooogly search and this ebay item came up, says its OE

go to this item and click on sellers other items, then type citroen zx into the search box, this will bring up all zx items that seller has, which one of is the rear most bush, as well as the one in the link

Many thanks for the part numbers. Spoke to my local GSF who have ordered them in for me at a similar price to the link you provided, but they are offering a 15% discount in store if you sign up for an offer.

Can't say I'm looking forward to the job but seems it is necessary to keep the old girl going.

Not yet. Just bought the bits and will inspect/replace over the weekend. Will report back.

So I tackled this job at the weekend. As suspected, the l/h front mounting rubber had split, but changed them all while I was at it. Handling and noise levels to normal now.

In the end it took me about 6 hours, including a bit of cleaning and tinkering while I was at it. However, that also included a trip back to the parts shop to change one of the mounts. Three of the 4 were Lemforder(?) branded parts, which seemed very good quality. The fourth - the r/h front mount - was clearly a cheap imitation which simply wouldn’t fit. The two boot floor studs were of different lengths and weren’t even parallel. The (very soft metal)threads immediately stripped.

Oh well, job done now – thanks for the words of advice.
