ZX 1.8i axle into Diesel car - also gearbox question.

Post by xsaras4ever »

Hello all,

we have just acquired a ZX 1.8i Estate , mega tidy, 4 new tyres, with towbar but reputedly blown engine having burst a rad hose.

We got the car in return for doing a clutch for someone.

We are a comitted diesel family and havn't had a petrol car for years. Was surprised to see a 16v engine in a ZX estate.

Anyway, we are going to break the car, and the back axle looks identical to the diesel ZX cars. Is it ?

Also , the gearbox looks identical to the gearbox on the diesel but the ratios have to be different ??

Can someone tell us what else that gearbox is good for - maybe Pug 205 GTi ??

Also , what else is the injection system common on ??

Thanks

ZX 1.8 16v.. well, it will be fitted to Xantia 16v and 306 16v. Most likely Peugeot 406 1.816v too...

BE3 family of gearbox, but correct gear ratios NO GOOD for derv... only suitable for another petrol..

Rear axles will ALL be the same petrol or DERV so worth keeping. Dont bother keeping front suspension from the petrol for DERV, the XUD/DW8 will be too heavy and if petrol struts fitted to a DERV car it will be too low and soft due to the DERVs extra weight.
Sharing a pug 207 1.6 hdi Sw 16v.

Morning from France.

Great , thanks for that.

We have made the tools to rebuild the back axles - a simple tool for slowly pushing the new bearings in without damaging them and a bearing press using a lorry hydraulic jack for removing and fitting the axle shafts to the swinging arm.

Therefore, even a mildly worn back axle is very useful to us.

Shame about the front struts as 99% of the cars in our area are diesel.

The previous owner was too busy chatting while driving to notice that a hose had burst and the car had shed all its water and she drove it till it stopped.

Thanks for the great info though

The estate back axle is differnt from the saloon in so far as the torsion ratings ,ie it might be a little high ! BUT if its done a few miles with a few heavy loads it might be back to the correct ride height for a saloon 1.8zx estate a rare beast, should go very well if fixed

I got a 305 wagon which started out as a gasser but somebody put a XUD diesel engine in it, a long long time ago, somewhere in Africa. They didn't change anything else, only the motor, I think it still even has the transmission and certainly the suspension, they literally JUST swapped the motor. I been driving it for a long time without even knowing it wasn't originally diesel, and it's not really problematic. It's stance is a little nose-down, but I think that's more because the previous owner put bigger tires on the back, but it has no issues with handling or gearing or anything. Its the really weak 1.8n/a so I think maybe the fact that it has a gasser transmission is the reason why its not as slow as it should be, lower gearing? It still cruises at 80 at civilized RPM thought, and I don't ever need to rev it hard.

Like I said I didn't even realize it wasn't originally a diesel, until I figured out it had a 1.6 gasser wiring loom etc. Then looked through the paperwork, and sure enough.
