Another Heater/Blower

Post by peter306 »

Hello, im a newby to this forum so please bear with me.

Xantia 1.8 16 valve W reg.
The heater/blower decided to stop working the other day. Following advice on this forum this is what i've done.
Bypassed the pcb, motor works
Connected the motor properly, pressed the pcb relay, motor works.
Ckecked power on the orange wire, engine running, no power
took the ECU out, cleaned it, connected it all back up, got power on the orange wire 0.9
Checked fuses 5 12 and 21, fuses 5 and 12 showed 14 volts with engine running, fuse 21 showed 14 volts engine off.
Checked the green relay, 14 volts with the engine running.
Once i'd put the green relay back in I checked the orange wire and it now showed 14 volts with the engine running.
I checked the heater/blower motor after each of these checks and still no power, does still run when the pcb relay is pressed.

Any further advice will be greatly appreciated including what resistance should there be on the pcb transistors,
I got two pcb's from the local scrappy, one shows around 650 on both transistors, the other shows about 1500 on both transistors

Amendment to that lot, I unplugged the brown plug from the pcb and and checked it again, it showed no power on the orange wire,
It's showing the 14 volts when it's plugged into the pcb

Thanks very much in advance
Peter

Heater/blower not working

Post by peter306 »

Hello again

As detailed in my post on the 11 Nov i have rechecked and replaced the relay mount as one of the tabs was broken causing it to operate intermittently,
I have replaced the Resistor pcb board with a new one and have still got the problem,
there is power to the brown socket but the fan will only run when the relay is manually operated and then only on full power.
I have done all the Fuze and Relay checks as detailed in the sticky post by Rory Perrett for which I thank him

Help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards Peter

Where did the replacement PCB come from? There are some floating about on ebay that are fitted with the wrong transistors, and will never work... can you swap the fan with a known good unit to see if that will fix it?

Hello Richard
the replacement PCB was off ebay, from EDMTrading, good percentage feedback and not the cheapest, the transistors are ST26025A.

I've swapped the fan assembly and have exactly the same problem, again when i connect the relay/switch unit on the pcb board the motor runs merrily away. Only blowing cold air though.
Rory Perrett has an entry about fuse 5 not giving a full voltage and i seem to remember mine was fluctuating, thought a poor earth on my multimeter, i'm going to check it again tommorrow , got the fuse box out, pulled the red tag and then it just needed some gentle help to slide it forward, a big flat bladed screwdriver at the back between the box and the mount and gently lever it forward, very tight fit.

I've now found that fault on 2 cars. Mine and Timmy69's when he brought it across.
Best of luck

Hello all
on the relay I have 1 yellow wire going into pin 1, bridge that to body earth and i get 6.6 volts
1 green wire going to pin 3 , bridge that to body earth and i get nothing
bridge pins 3 and 5 and the motor goes when the pcb switch is squeezed
replace the relay, nothing happens
looks like my car doesn't agree with the wiring diagrams and looks like i'm not getting enough voltage into the relay
Does anyone know which connector on the back of the fuse box has the feed wire to the relay from fuse 5

hello Stickyfinger,
thanks for that, going to wire in a direct feed to the relay this weekend, only temporary of course. see if that solves the problem,
I'm sort of semi retired so times are not much of a problem.

No worry, what did we do before these machines. Hopefully it will be the fact that the relay isn't getting enough power.

out of interest what type of laptop and whats it done, I take them apart and fix them where possible.

eventually got round to doing some more, fixed a bridge between fuse 5 and the relay so it was getting 12 volts straight from the input power side of the fuse, started the car, blower motor started, speed slider works, motor speeds up and slows down, disconnected the bridge, put the fuse back in and nothing.

Got to be the wire between the fuse box and relay or the fuse box itself.
Next step, find the feed wire from the fusebox and check the power from there, if thats ok then its the fusebox out.
Any other thoughts/ideas will be most welcome

Its an old HP, the heat fan has blown....not in anyway worth more than dumping......getting another (old) one next week sometime.

If you still need it after...np

Thanks for that Stickyfingers, as i said , hopefully its just replace a wire. find out later this week.

If it was an hp DV series they are known for overheating. good luck.

Just put another mobo in mine after the GPU fell off the board on the old one - 7 months after I 'fixed' it by cooking it with a paint stripper :-D

Back to the fan problem. This seems to be a common-ish problem on the Mk2. There is a splice in the wire somewhere that gives up. Is the AC switch light dim / non existant too? I had similar trouble with mine - I ran in a new wire from the switched side of ignition switch (the contacts that run the blower / HRW) to the back of the relay socket (just engough room to get in without taking the fuse box out!) - been fine ever since, and that was at least 5 years ago....
