Mirror heating failure

Hi guys
First frost down here this week and it would seem that the drivers door mirror heating has failed over the summer. Can anyone say if this is likely to be a broken wire running through the door shut, or the tailgate. The feed for the HRW is broken in the tailgate, and is on the to do list, but the mirrors worked fine last Winter in this condition.
Is this likely to need a complete new unit or is fitting a new glass or heating element an option. All the positioning features are working fine.
Could a Lexia session identify where the fault lies.
The glass has a vertical line of Amber dots, on to the right of which is a convex section, is this standard on mk 2's or is this only on exclusives, can't believe how useful this feature is.
Going to get the HRW sorted as soon as we get some dry weather, oddly enough the lack of it didn't cause any inconvenience last Winter, a quick blast of air con being quite sufficient when needed.
I put this down to the mk 2 being a far more waterproof beast than my previous mk 1 which always needed the HRW on every morning.

If its the element in the mirror glass they are very easy to replace, mine cost £4 from ebay and took minutes to fit.

Paul, which car are you asking about ?

If its a Xantia then no a Lexia will not provide any information about a heated rear view mirror. (It doesn't even communicate with the window winders on a Xantia )

Blind spot convex is an original S2 feature, and ALL should of had them fitted, unless broke and replaced.

You might need to pop the glass out to do a manual check of the element with a small Volt Meter. Cant remember positivly now but either tilt the mirror right down and just behind the top centre of the glass (IF Not, then bottom centre, tilt right upwards) you should see the ends of two wires - it is infact one wire, unhook one of them, and the glass will come away. Watch for the wires to the element, the connector can come off easilly.

Check the element resistance with the voly meter.. this will tell you if its working or not.

Refitting the glass, re hook the wire to its home place at the top and make sure the wire is sitting correctly all the way round, it should be "Cutting" into the slots on the curcular section. Then carefully, and evenly firmly press the glass in, it should pop onto the motor house....

My HDI also has a broken wire at the hatch. It also doesnt work, but Ive simply not bothered with it...

So I'm guessing my S2 Exclusive has heated rear view mirrors too then ? I'd never really given it any thought. The mirrors never seem to fog up so I'm guessing that means it works!

When do the heating elements activate ? Any time the key is on or is there something more sophisticated at work ?

They heat up WITH the Rear heated window is on... So rear window and both mirrors are all connected to the RHW switch

Thanks Paul, that's a very clear explanation of how to get the glass off and back on again, a voltmeter and the expertise to use it are two things I don't possess so for a fiver or so I think I'll just change what's necessary.
Are the element and the glass separate items or do they come as one?
Simon yes it is the Xantia, can't say whether im happy or sad it has only limited information available to the Lexia. I fear I'm getting the first symptoms of C5 desiring.

As a C5 owner I would say stick to the Xantia while the problems are just minor ones like that!

Noooo if your electronic knowledge is small, STICK to the Xantia.. with a C5 the first thing to learn to use is the Lexia Diagnostic equipment.

A Volt meter is quite easy to use Paul... there pleanty on here who can help you!
