407 1.6 hdi persistant oil leak from turbo oil return SOLVED

Post by Masterbish »

Hello
I have just brought a 407 1.6 hdi, it has an oil leak from where the oil return flange connects to the bottom of the turbo, i pulled the turbo fitted an original gasket and its still leaking, pulled the turbo again the mating surfaces look good but had a lot of oil on the surfaces which indicates the gasket didn't do its job, fitted 2 original gaskets, thinking if the surfaces are not true it would make up for it, still leaking oil, pulled the turbo yet again fitted 2 more original gaskets and used a little high temp gasket sealant and its still leaking.
The return is gravity fed and under no pressure so why is it still leaking so bad, i have never had so much problems curing a simple oil leak before, can anyone please shed some light on this frustrating problem.
Thanks in advance

hi and welcome

can you post some photos of the general area the leak is around,
maybe its not coming from were it appears to be from,
or the matting surfaces are distorted or even there is a crack in one of the flange's

were are you located

Try running a bead of silicon sealant around the edge of the flange after thoroughly cleaning it and allow it to set overnight before refitting, if it is leaking from there that should cure it.

Hi guys

Thanks for the quick replies

i took the turbo out and dismantled the flange it was apparent is was not leaking this time. it turned out to be the o ring between the turbo compressor housing and the turbo body, the o ring had a nick in it, i couldn't find an o ring that late on a Saturday afternoon so i flipped it and rotated it 180 and used a little high temp copper sealant, hopefully when i start later today it will be ok this time, if not i will have to order a repair kit and take the turbo off again.
