Hum from engine bay

Post by KennyW »

Good morning All,

Over the past couple of weeks a low level hum has been coming form the engine bay. The general area is driver's side of engine aux belt area. I suspect possibly a bearing but which one.The nose increases slightly with speed. It is not the front wheel bearing as I can hear at idle, car standing still.

Any thoughts :?:

Any flickering of dash lights? An audible hum could also be alternator issues.

Most likely the alternator - HDis seem prone to this. Use a long screwdriver / piece of stick / what ever is to hand pressed against your ear (used a breaker bar at my mate's the other week) and listen to the various components with the engine idling - it will be obvious which one is making the noise. HDi alternator change is not as hard as it first looks....!

Thanks Richard and Adam,

No flickering lights, yet :!: I was thinking of the Alt. Will check n the next few days.

Has anyone changed or attempted to change the bearing in the Alternator.
