Xantia estate tailgate

Post by pete the bus »

Hi, can anyone tell me please if a S2 tailgate for a Xantia estate will fit onto a S1? Many thanks.

Cheers Malcolm. I have a 1997 (P) S1 estate with a smashed rear window. There is a S2 (W) at a breakers near to me with a good condition tailgate with window. They want £30 for the complete tailgate. If I can be assured it will slot straight in then I will get it tomorrow...
If not then I will be interested in claiming the one from your breaker.

Thanks for that, Malcolm. So, just to confirm, the S2 tailgate WILL NOT fit the S1? I don't mind if there are cosmetic differences, so long as it physically fits...

I've not checked, so I have to believe Malcolm, but I'm very surprised as I understood that apart from the nose, there are no significant differences between S1 and S2 bodywork.

I learn something new every day.

I have been to the breakers today and have successfully swapped the tailgate from the S2 into my S1. Result! Dimensions are exactly the same for both. Wiring loom seems identical too. The only differences I can see are the wiper arm is arranged differently and some differences in the trim.
i haven't completed the wiring and trim yet. Getting the top stop light wiring and rubber pipe for the washer along the inside of the tailgate looks like it's going to present some problems. Anyone have any ideas how best to do it?

I think another difference is the S1 has a barrel lock for a key, whereas the S2 doesn't and is locked by the central locking only.
