disc fix (securing) screw / capscrew - rear discs?

Post by pseud »

Hello Folks

What does this screw do?

It seems to be the same - the Xantia has a disc fix screws (Haynes describes them as disc securing screws), C5 has capscrews and the BX has both (capscrew to RPO No. 03886; disc fix screw from RPO No. 03887) in the same place.

I know it sounds like the bleeding obvious - it holds the wheel on, right?! Or, at least the rear brake disc. But, it's too small and puny to do that under load - so, does it only hold the disc in place while the wheel bolts are off and not holding things together. Or, am I wrong and that puny screw is in fact holding the whole lot together under load!

If someone who's taken these things apart a bit has some advice it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks,
M.

That one... you can do without it, but it's a hassle if the disc spins round when you've got the wheels off, because lining it all up is a PITA.

Thanks, that's what I thought - but then had this frightening thought that it just might be the other...

And, so I can happily replace disc fix screw with capscrew and avoid drilling holes in spacers to avoid fouling said disc fix screw.

Thx,
Morgan.

I would get proper capscrews, as they can help you to re-fit the rear wheels. I tend to rotate the disc so that the capscrew is at the top, and then pop the wheel back on.

what ever type of screw/bolt you use it needs to be flush with the surface the wheel sits against

All Citroens use the same screw - hence I've got a box of these:

Sometimes I've had to drill the head off one to remove the disc. Now I just put them in sufficiently to bury the countersink. It doesn't need to be tight - the wheel bolts do the holding.

Right then, 2 x capscrews pt # 690536 it is!

49p per item ordered from Citroen parts - to replace 2 x disc fix screws pt # 96020546 that stick out from hub.

Thanks guys.

the peg type that protrudes from the disc surface

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
96020546 DISC FIX SCREW 0.57 GBP 0.68 GBP 0.68 GBP

is a good idea as it helps line the wheel up on fitting, and it is only 9p more than the counter sunk screw

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
0000690536 CAPSCREW 0.49 GBP 0.59 GBP 0.59 GBP

before you purchase either of these if you are buying new discs, look in the box with the discs, as decent discs come with two counter sunk fixing screws,

I'm fitting wheel spacers and trying to avoid drilling holes in them for the "peg", I've still got the alignment tool that comes with the jack & wheel brace kit so will rely on that if I need help putting the wheels on.
