Citroen C5 Sounds like a tractor after timing belt replaced

Post by fredoj »

I recently had my timing belt (Citroen C5, 2.0HDi, 2004 make, diesel) snap while driving below 5 miles/sec.
I did not know at the time, and tried the ignition 4 times, after the car stopped.
My mechanics, checked and found that the belt was not really cut, but had split at some section.

They also found out that the water pump had seized,

So we bought anew timing belt and a new water pump,
but on replacement, the car now sounds like a tractor.

It had not been driven, but that noise, is very bad.

Anyone has had an issue like that?

did you take the rocker cover off to inspect the camshaft for damage.
My Xantia threw its cambelt a fiortnight ago and it snapped my camshaft in half. and the engine was only idling when it went. it could be that your engine jumped a few teeth on your old belt and did some damage to the engine?
I hope youmlined up all the timing marks on the pulleys before you put the new belt on?

I'm not surprised your timing belt snapped if you get it up to that speed...... :P

The 8v HDi engine doesn't snap camshafts or bend valves when the belt snaps - it breaks rockers instead, not a head-off job. I suspect the OP's car has either the timing out, or some broken rockers. It needs the rocker cover removing to check the rockers, and if there's any broken ones, replace them, then time it up correctly.

Mike,
I didnt say take the head off I said take the rocker cover off in which case if any rockers were broken this would be the best cause of action. why would I suggest removing the head?

Eh? I didn't say you did suggest removing the head. I was merely pointing out to the OP that unlike the 1.9TD, which in my experience does bend valves, and thus requires the head off, the 2.0HDi 8v does not. It doesn't snap camshafts either.

The best course of action is clearly to remove the rocker cover, replace broken bits, and then make sure the cam is timed correctly.

Mike,
appolagies mate, I seem to have got the camshaft bit wrong I forgot that the HDi's dont break the camshaft and only break the rockers I should have pointed this out instead.

I believe the Hdi engine can run okay with the cambelt 1 tooth out, but sounds a bit rough. Check rockers, then timing and hopefully it is one of those....

Northern mike is right. Seen loads with just the rockers snapped In a ideal world you should replace all 8 as weve had it in the past where weve just replaced the broken ones then 2 weeks later other weakend ones break

Thanks everyone, this is exactly what was done, we opened the head, and took it to a specialist who felt all the valves should be replaced as a precaution
the exhaust valves were bent though.

Is this why it was running rough or is it still running rough??

After doing what I mentioned (replacement of valves etc ), it became very smooth, it felt like a new engine, then after a few hours of running, it began to run rough again, so I suspect what coastline taxis suggested is true, all the rockers
should be replaced. we will open to see if any is broken, but the sound I heard, is similar to the one I had heard earlier.
