Wheel Bearing

Post by Stickyfinger »

Hi

Getting a roar (no vibration) on a right hand corner, like tire roar but more...suspect wheel bearing on the way out. (Just changed the disks as well :( )

Can you suggest, 1st, it looks like a home job, is it ? (I don't have a press but I do have a hammer), 2nd any tips or "special tools I will need. Pains say joint splitter, hub puller

Best source ? for bearings.

A press is very recommended to get the new bearing back in again, they can be a real 'mare to get out.
If it's a front bearing you shouldn't need a hub puller since the hubs press fit into the bearing. I'd recommend highly getting a good pair of circlip pliers and some plus gas. When changing the front hub bearings on my ZX the worst part of the job was getting the poxy retaining circlip out.

Getting the upright (hub carrier) off is quite an easy home job if it hasn't all rusted together into a singular lump of kack yet.

I like to build up a set of changeover hub carriers when the basic item is cheap and available. Then you're just faced with a swap, rather than racing the clock while stuck bearings laugh at you.

All hail the Alfa 147 with its bolt-in front wheel bearing carrier. They sure got that right.

OK, had it jacked up, pulled the wheel top/.bottom/ rocked side2side....zero movement

Took off wheel, crowbar in....cant see any movement !

Wheel back on, thought it best to ask first

So, what else could cause a roar when going round right hand corners only ?.....me big time scratch headie

Degrading wishbone bushes, transmitting more bearing noise and disc scuffing sounds to the chassis. Check your caliper slides freely as well.

Hi

Checked disks and calipers, new disks and pads about a month ago, Wheel spins free & no "drag marks" on the disk, caliper works OK and even, handbrake is fine on 5 clicks and retracts really well (considering the stupid design). It is not a drag type noise, more like increased tire rumble. (yes I have checked the pressures)

Its in for a garage service next week, I will see if it gets worse over the next few days and I will get them to check the bushes. Funny how it is only on the right hand bends it is evident.
