406 - Power loss on hills

Post by dave406 »

Hi all

This one is slightly dangerous. I noticed my cruise control was not workng today then as i was going up a hill the car acted as if i had taken my foot off the acc pedal and started dropping speed. To get it back i had to take my foot off the pedal and put it back on. I reset the BSI and went out still no cc and still did it once or twice. So my in laws suggested going out for tea so parked mine up and we went out for an hour or 2. Come back and found that CC was working fine now, however got the same issue going up a hill.

Its an Auto if that makes any difference. I don't have PP2000 as I cannot afford it yet does this sound like the MAF sensor?I read somewhere that if you pump the breaks till the pedal goes hard then keep your foot on it and it slowly goes down I don't have a vacuum leak?!? Also it will rev above 3000 RPM

Does anyone in Bristol have PP2000 to check error codes for me? Will it be the MAF?

Other cause for that is a faulty brake light switch (yes really) as it will see braking so cut the engine power. You might have two switches on the pedal or linkage area I'm not 100% sure.

Could be the MAF but I'd not expect it to be intermittent if it was. It would generally be a bit slow not dangerously slow (I know exactly what you mean by the "no pedal" thing I've had it myself its quite alarming!)

A PP diag will reveal though as you say.

Yep, I'd also say the brake switch, I've seen all kinds of strange errors down to a faulty switch.

On my 307 I'd be cruising on the motorway and then all of a sudden the car would rapidly slow down as if I'd hit the brakes.

Its a nice cheap part, about £6 at Euro. Although only the genuine Peugeot part comes with a little bit of extra wiring to extend the loom a bit. This bumps up the price to about £23. Not sure if its relevant or needed on the 406 though, this was a facelift 307.

Will the brake switch cause the issue even though CC is switched off on the stalk?

Yes unrelated effects those without CC too, if it senses brakes then it can cut engine power. Not 100% it will be that but it may be a cheap option. As above be aware may be more than one switch fitted.

There are two fitted to the pedal assembly on some models. One of each type it seems.

Switch-Brake:

453451 BVM and Right Hand Drive
453452 Auto Gearbox AL4 and Right Hand Drive (you want this one I think)

Contact Switch:

16287P BVM and Right Hand Drive (not sure if you'll have this being auto)

I don't know. :)

Take a look above the pedals to see if you have two switches fitted or just one.

I think on a 406 all the switches are around the pedal (for example 206's HDi have one on each side of the car, on them the one on the passenger side (RHD car) is the brake lights, the one on the actual pedal is the ECU) but have a look anyway to see what you have fitted.
