DIY garages

Post by KP »

Has anyone used or know of one around the Manchester/Warrington areas at all??

Something like this?
http://www.userviceurepair.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just thinking i would quite happily pay a little bit of money for a lift so i can do the work on the XM and then the Xantia with a lot more ease than i currently have and in dry and warmer conditions :)

That's a rather interesting concept.

I'm not sure how much I'd trust people with my workshop (if I had one) but it's nice to see someone offering specialist equipment to amateurs who are perfectly capable of doing it themselves if they had the facilities.

And yes; I too would be happy to pay a few bob to use someone's lift for a couple of hours.

Halfords service centres did that back in the sixties, I presume it died out, unless anyone knows better. :)

Not many left and they ain't cheap. Your nearest is:- http://www.selfservicegarage.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. There's one in Acton near where I used to live and one in Southend if you fancy a trip to the seaside.

Not a lot of benefit to just having the lift, if you don't possess the other tools; impact guns, usual spanner and socket assortments, persuaders and sundry gear. I suspect they make a good coin from overstayers.

Most of them have a fair selection of tools, some specialist stuff, access to online repair manuals and some even have diagnostics. (check the link)

The one in Acton (NW London) is still running but it ain't cheap. £60 a day for a bay booked in advance with a reasonable range of tools available for free use. Also an MOT test centre on site. See them here:- http://www.pitstartgarage.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

£60 for a day isnt too bad really for a warm place to work and a lot can be done in a day. I bet paul could even do a full engine swap in a day under cover and with a workshop like that to hand to make things easier :)

£60 a day isn't bad at all, not when even most Independent specialists charge more per hour than that + VAT. If you know what you are doing, you could save a fortune doing your own repairs.

If you've got your day planned, know exactly what you're going to do in that day, and have brought all the necessary parts and tools your £60 then becomes a decent price, especially in the depths of winter.

I agree with that. Make sure the tools are all ready and do any prep work before the clock starts running. No point in sitting waiting for parts or taking off covers at £60 a day if you know what you are going to need.
