Peugeot 605 - any information on the electronic suspension?

Post by red_dwarfers »

I've just bought a Peugeot 605 SRDT 2.1 TD with the electronic suspension setup. I'd like to learn a bit more about the electronic suspension and also these thick round coily things where the hydraulic rams should be (Apart from a brief fling with a Vauxhall Corsa when I first passed my driving test, I've only owned hydraulic Citroens  ) I see there is a hydractive looking button on the dash and these rubber hoses coming from the top of the suspension struts but that's all I know so far.

I'd like to know generally how the setup works, what sensors it uses to decide the ride (same as hydractive?)
Does the ECU send signals directly to the dampers to do things or is fluid pumped in and out of the dampers?
In what way do the dampers change?
Is the button on the dash similar to hydractive 1 or 2 in how it works (full sports mode or does it just alter the threshold?)
The brochure I just found says that the electronic suspension was only fitted to the V6 models. Would this car have been a one off, was it offered on the TDs for a short period of time or have me and the previous owner just got the button and tubes coming off the struts mixed up with something else?

Lots of questions!

Cheers Adam!

It's controlled by mostly Denso components.

There's an ECU in the main engine ECU box, a throttle pedal sensor same as a Xantia, steering angle sensor and a unique sensor potentiometer off the front anti-roll bar. From memory the brake pressure sensor is tied in as well (plus road speed).

Oil stays in the dampers, valving alters. Like Hydractive, failure mode is fully harsh. By now most will be low on gas in the dampers, meaning the soft ride isn't really. Most common dodgy components seem to be steering sensor and the ARB unit. Good luck getting Planet to talk to it! When the sports button flashes the unit has defaulted to fully hard.

Cheers Malc!

Turns out I got overexcited about the suspension and got the rear electric window cut off switch confused. The flexi hoses coming from the top of the struts are intriging though. The NS one almost looks like its going to an egine mount.

Because it's a series 1 605 you don't need the VIN - it can't filter.

Those takeoffs are WEIRD. Even the Ph1 cars officially had the same suspension (give or take the firmware) as later ones. Your best bet is to join up the 605 Forum and struggle in Google French. I am suspecting the suspension might be optioned up from a limousine spec or something. Is it ex-consular? There were armoured ones built, perhaps they used something like that to self-level?

As far as I know its not ex-consular.

I've had another nose at the top of the suspension struts. Next to the breather is a cap. This cap unscrews to reveal a valve pretty much the same as one on a tyre.

605 progress isn't progressing much at the moment. I'm having a break from the cars for a few months, it's too cold and I need a break after the XM!

I haven't gotten around to looking on the French site yet.

Very interesting. I've been tooling around in mine quite a bit; found a fault with the brake pressure switch (it doesn't revert promptly to closed circuit) so the suspension thinks you're braking at road speed, and stays hard. Of course the switch is NFP.

The idea of taking a break from cars is a good one; something I can't bring myself to do yet.
