Lumpy idling

Post by evoke »

I noticed the car had lumpy idling today - engine was cold and it was a quick run to the supermarket. Only noticed it at traffic lights (i.e. when stationery). Any ideas?

Thanks for that. Is that going to be expensive?

Just for more info, it's a new-shape 2008 C5 2.2 HDi.

I had it on my estate and it took a long time to discover what the actual cause was.
Injectors all cleaned and tested, showing one was barely working and not at all while idling - the engine leaped around quite dramatically.
£25 each for cleaning and testing, £78 for refurbishing the dud one.

^ Cheers, so not terminal or wallet-emptying hopefully. I did notice engine was leaping around a bit at idle.

As I have the same model and year as you, I just wondered what sort of miles your car has done. You seem to have had one or two problems with it and it would be good to be forewarned.
Mine has about 34000 on the clock. Cheers. ( ignore if you think I'm a nosey git):-)

Nearly 140K miles! I've put some Redex diesel fuel cleaner in the tank today. I didn't get any problems today and it ran as smooth as silk like it usually does, so it must have been a glitch yesterday.

I bought it with 136K miles on the clock last February. I've spent more money on it than driven it so far!

Cars been fine since the lumpy idling but it could be a warning sign of impending doom. I'll just enjoy it for as long as I can. That Redex injector/fuel system cleaner seems to have made a bit of a difference. The car is definitely less tractor-like in its engine sound at the moment.

You certainly don't believe in doing a lot of miles. I bought mine with 25k in July last year and I'm up to 34k+ now. We are off to Surrey at the end of next month again so that will add about 1500 miles. I just love the car on the motorway.
