Turbo or not turbo...

Post by hippy »

I have found the turbo 'kick' (you know that bit when you reach 2000rpm...!!?[:D]) is sadly lacking[V]. I can hear the turbo whining away as it always has done but its like there just is NO turbo. Have found fuel leak on front of pump tho'..I think it coming from the device for increasing fuel during the turbo boost (I have a lucas/rotodiesel). Could this explain the lack of power? If so, are these items replaceable or is it a new fuel pump scenario..

Needs new boost fueling diaphragm available from any diesel specialist.

Have just acquired a ZX TD with Bosch pump, It makes the old 1.7TD BX look breathless, I think I`ll look in the breakers for a Bosch unit instead.

before you spend loads on pumps and things, wmy dad had a similar problem with his BX TD Estate. It turned out to be the pedal box had broken (a common problem) Check your gas pedal isn't bent to the right and bottoming out on the wheelarch, so the throttle is not opening fully

If your vehicle is a diesel then it does not have a fuel pump.
simple as that.
The fuel is supplied by the mechanical injector pump, which is run off the timing belt and you really don't want to look at prices for replacing those (£700 ish)
I would seriously look the possibility of the turbo wastegate having stuck open to release pressure. If this is the case then all the additional boost the turbo is creating is will go out the wastegate and not into the engine where you want it to go. Also with the system not being air tight then there will be a more noticable turbo whine.
The wastegate is a fairly cheap and easy job, you could even free it up without replacing it!
good luck.

I agree with dave Burns - this is the most likely cause (and the cheapest to do). Also worth checking the gasket between the intercooler an the inlet manifold is still present and sound. This will NOT affect the fuel leak on the pump though and this must be sorted.

Ta for comments guys, Will check for pedal box cos me dads had the same only the clutch was affected. Not sure about changing to bosch system tho' sounds too much effort..thought zx was 1.9l unit anyhoo..
Due to fuel leak I suspect Dave the Guru is right. Is this a tricky job? Any special tools/pitfalls?

Don't know about changing the diaphragm, never had to do one, I steer clear of these pumps now so wont ever have the pleasure, hopefuly[:D]
A turbo wastegate directs exhaust gas away from the exhaust turbine when boost pressure has been reached, if more boost is required it is obtained by an increase in shaft speed, after adjusting the wastegate to begin opening at higher pressure.
The air charge is not vented by the wastegate, is is simply prevented from being generated in the first place.
