The knocking noise is what happens to Renaults of any kind fitted with their take on the common rail 1.9 diesel engine, they fall apart in a very expensive and impressive way, dont even bother it will be a world of pain you dont need, if you must have a renault get a petrol. All three of our rep Renaults died at under 100k one with turbo oil seal failure which was (im told) a rather impressive way for a car to end its life, the other two suffered big end failure resulting in this knocking and shortly after complete failure of the bottom end in one case.

I would agree with Dean. While a lot of Renault diesel owners are happy with their cars there are far too many problematic ones to get my excited about them. I have looked into getting a LagunaII DCi in the past but the engines are usually pretty useless and can have all sorts of problems from blown turbos, ruined engines (bearings), gearbox problems, etc.

They might be tempting because they are cheap, of course there is a very good reason for that!

Dont even start me on the Renault master van on my depot, its the smallest power output of all the 2.5 DCI engines available and at 80k something its hadf a new gearbox, head, injectors, injector seal (many times) power steering pump, fuel pump etc etc, the thing is a liability.

There are happy Renault owners out there though i must point out ive never met one as he lives in northern Ireland.

Happy enough with my Nissan petrol engine and Toyota gearbox.........combined with Vel Satis seats of course.

Why do Volvo V40 diesels not blow up? Same engine..........Volvo implementation or not enough made to show problems. They have Mitsubishi gearboxes mind.
