A Fine Whine

Hello all, my recently acquired Zx volcane TD has a whining noise, it changes note when I accelerate/decelerate and is similar in all gears, suggestions anyone?

If you can be bothered, slip the auxilary belt off and try it. It may give you a clue where to start looking.

Possibly the turbocharger - the one on my Xantia TD whistles quite distinctly when it's cold, sounds a lot like gearbox whine but with a more rapid frequency rise.
