Citroen Xantia Forte 110 hdi with wheel trims. My first ever diesel citroen.
Hi, I was thinking of getting the xantia remapped or chipped I need advice on whether I would see any actual gains on economy/torque/bhp.
I have read that on some tuning chips they increase the boost by 30% increasing the life of the engine (Did i miss something), i was under the impression that if you increase the boost pressure of the turbo more than factory settings that the life expectancy would drop and you would be adding more stress to the gearbox and engine because of the added torque/bhp. or am i wrong.
Please advise whats the best option, I have in the region of £200-£300 might go to £400 spare to spend on xantia, the car is used 85% town driving and remainder used on dual carriageway as and when once a fortnight, I am looking more for economy but would love more power.
Thank in advance.

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
It depends entirely on how you are going to drive it after upping the power. If you make regular use of the extra power it will increase fuel consumption and increase the chance of head gasket failure, if you drive sensibly it could improve your fuel consumption because the higher torque allows you to keep the revs down by changing up earlier. I fitted a tuning box to my 2.2 Hdi C5, it improved the performance no end but had no effect on the fuel consumption, I subsequently sold it and bought a 2.0. Hdi, that improved the consumption by nearly 50%. As I drive as economically as possible anyway, rarely exceeding 2000 rpm or 60 mph the box didn't help so I took it off.

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
Diesel tuning is a bit of a funny thing really, since diesels aren't worried about having accurate air fuel ratios you can burn as much or as little fuel as you like (within reason of course).
Upping the boost probably would decrease engine life a fair amount, the 110 HDi is well known to exceed 200k miles without much difficulty but since they're getting a bit old I wouldn't want to push it too hard. And also the turbocharger seems quite well matched to the engine - there probably isn't a lot more boost that can be squeezed out of it.
As far as I've been told a lot of diesel tuning is done by tweaking injector opening times and upping fuel flow a little.
I've met the chap that runs this site as a hobby: http://www.hdi-tuning.co.uk/ (I'm not affiliated in any way, we just work at the same company). He reckons he can shoe horn a good 20 horsies in without much difficulty by changing the injection mapping.
There are a few tuning boxes available, a good friend of mine swears by his but I haven't been tempted yet. I however would avoid the tuning devices that plug into the fuel rail pressure sensor, they tell the ECU that fuel rail pressure is a bit low so it compensates by making the pump work harder...
To be honest though the 110 HDi is a lovely engine to drive in my opinion, buckets of torque and nice smooth power delivery (especially once you've disabled the EGR). A perfect daily driver
Out of interest Peter, what sort of fuel economy do you get? I'm quite happy with my slightly over 50mpg - I'm not a quick driver but I don't go out of my way to conserve fuel, and it is leaking a little diesel

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
I'm getting 55mpg out of my C5 2.0 HDi. The computer actually states 53.2 but I've measured it myself and the computer is actually under.
I have a tuning box on my 90bhp Berlingo 2.0 HDi. It makes a nice difference. It's been on for nearly 2 years with no ill effects.

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
My C5 has averaged 57.7 mpg over the last 3867 miles but to be fair I only tend to use it for longish journeys, it did 60.1 mpg when we went to Scotland earlier this year, my speedo is unusually spot on according to the satnav and the fuel I am using bears out those figures.
We use the 406 mostly for local running about and that is showing around 52 mpg but when we came back from Scotland last year it did nearly 69 mpg over 650 miles but again that was at 50-60 mph, I have done over 1000 indicated miles on a tankful but it seems to hold more than the C5 tank.
My 2.2 C5 wouldn't average much more than 40 mpg however I drove it.

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
I seem to get 47-48 according to computer all the time on my hdi 110 c5, which I am very happy with.. lots of long journeys, often full or towing.. plenty of local hacking..
added a tuning box a couple of weeks ago, and haven't noticed a difference in economy.. did notice a performance difference but that does wear off I think, at least the perception of it does..
plug into fuel rail type..
towing at weekend from Dorset, so will see if the towing is slightly better..

That's not a bad average especially if you are towing. We came from Kent to Dorset 43 years ago - and stayed here.

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
Just add my penny's worth. Ive got a HDI 110 Xantia Exclusive. I bought it on 156k..
Anyway, I had a Tuning Box, and the sort I have plugs into the INJECTORS between the plugs to the injectors.
I have always had the box on Max setting, which is supposed to have the power up from 110 to 130bhp.. but thats a guess.
My car is now on 257k and still got the box on. The turbo still is mute in operation IE: No wines or funny noises, and the car still returns an average 50mpg.. and the 2nd 3rd and 4th in gear pull is GREAT FUN!
I think with all PSA the HDi 8v 110 is under tuned from factory.
Did you know that the Latest family of PSA HDi engines have gone BACK to 8v technology but giving 115bhp for the 1.6 engine, over 110bhp for the last gen 1.6 16v engines..

No, I didn't know they had gone back to 8 valves - interesting.

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
Well you see. the Theroy is an 8v engine is inheritally design a more Torquey and lower torque range type engine, where as a multi valve (16) engine is more revvy and has the power etc higher up. No use for lazy DERV engines... so with injector and Turbo technology they have increased power from more torquey 8v engine setup. Theres no need for a DERV to have BHP they thrive on Torque..
I think this is why the Original 8v 2.0 HDi engine is so strong... the perfect setup!

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
The lowest I have seen out of my 8v hdi90 c5 was just over 45mpg. This was towing a xantia on a trailer behind it so circa 1700-1800kgs all in for about 500miles
Most of the time it barely drops below 50 and I do quite a lot of short runs in it with the odd 15-20mile motorway run mixed in. I sit between 60-75mph on the motorway and use the torque when I need to but it's a lazy engine and will pull from about just under 30mph in 5th without complaint. It's not startlingly fast and is a pretty quiet engine even for a hdi unit but she is barely run in with 113,000miles clocked up in her 11 year life

Re: Xantia 110 hdi hatch Tuning
I've tried both on various HDI 8V 20l engined cars. The tuning box that I had was a PSI power box, it came with my fathers Xantia 90 BHP when I purchased it. Initially it didn't seem to produce many gains until I read that there were various settings. On opening the box a number of jumper settings could made, I selected warp speed well that's what it said on the instructions!xantiagreen wrote:Citroen Xantia Forte 110 hdi with wheel trims. This module transformed the car and worked even better on a Xsara HDI as the car was much lighter, the car would spin the tyres on dry roundabouts if you were not careful!
Moving on from the 90 BHP HDI's I tried the 110BHP PSI box (cheap E-bay purchase as these are expensive new) on a Xantia 110 BHP/C5 and the gains didn't seem as impressive to be honest. I decided to try the remap option on the C5 and although it did improve drive ability it was nothing like the Xsara HDI.
Remember there are loads of companies doing remaps providing many different tunes to suit what you are after. Be careful with whatever route you go down as insurance companies will not pay out if you haven't told them about something that turns up on your car after an accident.
My head says remap, my heart says tuning box.....
