C5 Limp Home mode

Post by kettlesimon »

Hi, my 2004 C5 2.0HDi is running in what i understand to be limp home mode (wont rev above 3000 revs and loses power on hill, etc. The EML is on showing an EGR fault. The mechanic who has had the car has tried all sorts with the EGR. First he blanked it off, which made no difference. Then he removed it completely cleaned it up, checked that the valve was opening and shutting properly, but still no improvement. He has removed the fault codes and EML but this comes back on very quickly when the car is driven. He has looked at the MAF, but feels that it is not the problem. Any ideas ?

Needs to have the codes read not just cleared and see what they are.

My 406 runs intermittently like this but with no light on, I was going to try cleaning the EGR with that aerosol cleaner but haven't got round to it yet. Mine has been like this for several months and it doesn't really bother me because I rarely drive at above 2000 rpm or 60 mph.

Too much is talked about re the EGR valve, I doubt that it has much effect on performance, if the engine management light is on I'd be looking elsewhere, the MAF first then all the thin vacuum pipes to and from the electrovalves, splits in them are very hard to see but often the cause of turbo loss.
The electrovalves (three of them) are all the same and can be swapped about to see if one shows up as faulty.

Ps. If posters looking for help would add their location (or near) to their posts they might get offers of help from nearby members, I'd certainly be happy to assist anyone not too far away.

Could it be intermittent with the MAF or is it likely to be something else? Sometimes its OK.

That's the problem we'll always have Peter when trying to diagnose from a distance, hands on and you can often spot the fault immediately.

I am unsure. I have decided to get the car down to an Independent Citroen Specialist in Middlesbrough and let him see if he can work any magic on it

I would be more inclined to got to a diesel specialist, they usually know what they are doing and are cheaper.

This doesn't sound like 'limp home' mode, does it?
I think I would check the fuel filter - it fixed mine with a lack of power, and it was disgustingly
dirty, though well within its service interval.
