Berlingo timing belt disaster

Post by Wookey »

A friend of mine's relatively new Berlingo (4yrs old?) blew up last month. Timing belt snapped on the motorway on the hottest day of the year.

I'm just wondering what tends to break on these when this happens and if it's worth my while trying to fix it, or if it's an engine-swap job? I'm very familiar with the XUDs, but have never owned an HDI (with computers and everything!). And anyone got a good engine they want to get rid of?

I do believe, unless it's the 2.0 8V HDI, it'll have broken or bent valves and might have damage to the cylinder head. Only might.

Shouldn't be any harder than an XUD to fix though. Probably easier as you won't have to time the pump. Check over on the Berlingoforum for more info..

If its a hdi 8v then fear not..

It will only of broken the rocker fingers and not any damage to the valves..

Its a partial strip down job in that the cam shaft needs to come off but thats in its own carrier.. remove any old rocker finger waste in thectop.. use a good stronge pencil magnet refit the rocker fingers cam shaft time the crank and cam fit a belt AND water pump while your in there and she should be good.

A customers xantia hdi broke its belt at about 60mph.. i refitted a set of rockers.. new belt and it went on for another 40k

Its no where near as disasterious as the older xud or dw8..

It wont need a complete engine if its hdi. They are designed to break the rocker fingers in this event.. replacement of the rocker lifters/cam followers will useually be surfice to be in working order again. Theres no need to even remove the head..

Trouble is, a 4 year old Berlingo is almost certain to be a 1.6 HDi, in which case it's probably carnage - and getting the head off might be impossible as the injectors probably won't come out. In that case, replacement engine is probably the way to go

Allot of people said the injectors would not come out of my 2.2 with ease but did come out within minutes after 90k.

Re: Cam belt snapped on Peugeot partner please help!

Hi

I have the same problem belt snapped on peugeot 308 1.6 hdi year 2011. This is the engine with 8 valves.
Does anyone know where I can take it or anyone can have a look at it. I'm hoping it's just the shims and camshaft.

Kind regards

I bought my 2012 Lingo 1.6 8v stop/start with 147000 miles. I discovered that the stop/start models are good for 150000 miles. I bought the kit, inc water pump and did it all when I did the full service.

Reason I'm saying this, why would a belt break at 4yrs old, unless it was doing space ship miles.... But even so, must be some other cause as these belts are sturdy looking things, thicker than a standard 16v belt!

I wonder if it's worth checking the idlers & tensioners during intermediate service?! It's a bit of a faff, but cheaper than a failure.
Has anyone seen the plot? :?

Looks like this engine does have rockers, so it might be possible that it 'just' needs rocker replacement. Savoy garage is not that far from you, they might take it on: https://www.citroen-mechanics.co.uk/

Whip it to bits. If it fixes it fixes. If not, get a second hand engine. You've nothing to lose by looking.
