Deformed road spring?

Post by Mr Micawber »

I am fitting a new OSF suspension strut to my 2003 C3 but I am puzzled by the road spring. When seated against the lower spring stop on the strut, the spring doesn't stand vertically. It bends over like a banana! Do I have a deformed spring?

Is there any shape on the strut where the spring hits it ? many vehicles have this bit shaped to make the spring sit right.

if this is before fitting the strut top it is normal for the spring to lay over at an angle, because the lower spring seat is slopping on the strut

Thank you Citronut and Stewart for your replies.

I also telephoned Monroe, the makers of the strut, and spoke to their extremely helpful technical department who looked up the spec. for my spring. To my amazement it's designed to be like that! So, provided that I tighten the coil spring compressing tools to a greater degree on one side, I can 'straighten' the spring and fit the top bearing assembly.

In the modern age it's still true that you learn something every day!
