I've just had the gearbox replaced in my '92 ZX 1.9D Aura with a cheapy manky thing from the local scrappy! I had quite a bit of trouble finding the right one as the linkages seem to vary a lot. I ended up picking the one that looked exactly the same as mine as it seems just getting one out of the same engine/model/year car doesn't mean it's the same box, therefore I don't know what car the new one came out of.
But the new one seems to be much higher ratio, which is actually quite good, makes the car seem a bit sportier, but is a bit annoying on the motorway. Any guesses what car this one came from?? Does the Volcane have a higher ratio box??
Can anyone tell me all the different types of gearbox used in zx's and their ratios??
Could this affect the speedo as well? I'm sure it's reading lower than it should.

Your box could have come from loads of different vehicles. Anything from a Visa or Pug 205, through BX's, ZX's, Pug 306's or Pug 405's. The difference in linkages lies with the BE1 or BE3 types. The BE1 had reverse going left and up, whereas the BE3 reverse went right and down. Can't help you on ratios.

The TD's have longer legs than the D's becuase there is both extra power on tap, and to keep the economy figures healthy since the td injects more fuel.
So you haven't got a td box, I think you have got a box from one of the higher reving petrol variants, which one who know's.
Speedo accuracy relies on the tyre size, if you are using the size of tyre the speedo drive is geared for then there is no problem, but you don't know what its geared for so you can't tell, you could test it using a friends car, if its miles out the speedo drive gears can be changed but idealy you want to rid the box and get the correct one.

To check the speedo find a quietish bit of motorway and get a passenger to time you between two mile markers while you drive at a steady 60. At 60mph you should cover a mile in one minute. Or a GPS system will give you an accurate speed.
Legally your speedo shouldn't read under but can be up to 10% over. But nobody is ever going to check it so it's up to you to decide if you can live with it.
