TU3 Valve Clearances

Post by Toby_HDi »

If the valve clearances are out of spec, could I expect the engine to sound tappety at idle? Just done a service on a 206 and was hoping an oil change would quieten it down. Only afterwards do I realise that this engine doesn't have hydraulic tappets.

I've read the procedure in the 206 Haynes manual. Seems straightforward enough. It stresses that the lock nuts must be tightened to the correct torque, however this emphasis is not included in the 205 manual. I don't have a torque wrench that goes that low so how critical is it? Any other pointers? If someone has some pictures of the set up that would be brilliant.

You can also get noise if the rocker arms touch the oil splash shield.

A step sideways may save your sanity; "glue" the inner spacers to the splash shield with RTV to simplify refitting the top cover.

i just use a spanner and screw driver and not observed the tightening torque settings never had any problems

Thanks. Think I'll have a go at them next weekend. Thinking they are out due to the noise. Probably weren't checked when whoever did the head gasket put the head back on. Wouldn't surprise me, they didn't even flush the system of the gunk. Didn't even clean the expansion tank.

Had a go at them today and its now much quieter. One of the inlets was quite far off. It is still a bit tappy though so I'm going to look at them again in a few days. I'm just wondering if there is any easier way of ensuring that a valve is fully open as I can't really see the camshaft to see the peaks. I just kept turning the engine until the valve was opening and then when I could see it had stopped I adjusted the two valves which were closed but is there more precise way

You find #1 TDC and mark the damper accordingly.

I understand that at TDC both the valves for that cylinder closed but will they be exactly where they need to be? IE. the rocker resting on the heel of the cam lobe. As far as I can understand it if the cam is anywhere else then it will be putting a little pressure on the rocker and the measured clearance will be slightly off. Or am I completely up the wrong tree?

there is quite a large tolerance,
as long as you watch the rockers as the required valve opens fully, then rotate the cam back a touch, this should bring that rocker on the rock which if correct,

then adjust the two that are fully closed, and following the sequence in the BOL
