C5 2.0HDI 110bhp vs Laguna 1.9DCI 120 bhp

Post by aneesh84 »

I would like your opinion about which car to choose:

http://palmelagare.olx.pt/citroen-c5-2- ... -439758973" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://lisboacity.olx.pt/renault-laguna ... -440844997" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The laguna seems a bit cheaper. But does the 1.9 120bhp DCI engine last as well as the 2.0 8v HDI engine?

Don't touch the Laguna! The service interval from Renault is far too long and leads to a lot of failures. Just put dci failure into YouTube and see what awaits you!

Steer well clear of the Renault DCI, the turbos self destruct and this leads to engine failure, the 6 speed gearboxes also blow up. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

My mate has just had to scrap his 54 reg Laguna estate because of engine failure due to a knackered turbo. He's still paying the finance off on it too.

Hang on you LOT!!

I asked the very same question a while back but got very different answers...

Dci engines are fine if you double your oil changes to 10k and use FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL ONLY.

Renault specified 18k intervals which is far to much. but 10k is perfectly adequte..

Agreed theres a lot more weaknesses on the laguna . window winders is another.. but i like them and still tempted by one.

Get a late 05 or 06 with the 2.0 16v chain cam engine and you get 150bhp and a far better engine and they dont self destruct either as they are a nissan engine and a damm good one too..

That would be fine if you could be sure that the oil changes were done at the shorter intervals using the correct oil Paul.
With a second hand one it's always a gamble on the car having been properly serviced.

The Nissan engine would certainly be less likely to fail as spectacularly as the 1.9 DCi.

I've owned both so can comment with an unbiased opinion. Dci engine has a poor reliability reputation unfairly, its largely down to owners taking the mickey with oil change intervals. Renaults service intervals are indeed far too long, i changed my oil every 8-10k miles or annually whichever came sooner. The HDi 2.0 8V is super economical and the crankshaft pulley is its only weak spot.
Laguna seating position is very low and the car handles very well for a saloon/tourer, a lot better than the C5 for sure. The C5 however gives a smoother ride due to the Hydractive suspension and i'd certainly take the C5 if i was gonna be doing lots of motorway miles. MkII Laguna is a pretty car, the C5 is the ginger haired stepson. Laguna electrics never totally failed but just failed to work occassionaly (sunroofs, windows, electric steering lock) some would call it personality, i called it a pain in the arse. Citroen electrics are marginally better but i still get spurious warning messages despite there being nothing wrong with the car. I've seen diesel Lag's with 250k miles still running strong but i've also seen C5's with 450k on still running fine, test drive both cars and see what you prefer, if you do go the Laguna route just be extra fastidious with your oil change regime and you'll be golden.

Failed turbos can contaminate the inlet tract and cause engine damage even when the turbo has been replaced. I looked into fixing my mates Laguna and running it myself nut the additional work and cost involved replacing parts other than the turbo made it unviable, plus there's always the chance the turbo can go again. They are nice looking cars but just not worth the bother IMHO.
