C5 2.2 exclusive se

Hi guys,

I don't post here often but im looking a c5 mk1 as a possiable car for getting to and from work, journey is about 22 miles each way, currently drive a 1.8petro mondeo and was just wanting something a little better on fuel.

Theres a 2.2hdi exclusive se for sale near me which I might go and look at tomorrow, its done 85K miles so its low mileage for a derv.

question is really, should I avoid it? What things should have been serviced/changed on this car of this age? should the particle filter have been changed by now?

I know the 2.2 seems to get a lot of bad press, so that's the only thing really in the back of my mind about the car. the car its self looks to be in really good condition, interior looks very good indeed as does the body work.

When I had a 2.2 mk1 then the ten miles to work and back and occasional local journeys would get about 34.4mpg.
It's not so great for economy

hmm, 34mpg, that's about what I get from the mondeo if not less. not that good then?

Not really. Motorway journey about 48 or so. Bit less depending on wind and stuff.

my journey to work is local roads for the first 3 miles cross country, then motoway for about 13 miles, then off into roads into Sheffield, so that might be a stop start bit, so a bit of variety

I have a 2.2 X7, and I'm lucky to get 45 mpg motorway. 34 ish urban. Poorest mpg for a HDI, but it's a heavy car and 173 bhp.
Lovely car, but would never recommend it for economy.

In the summer such as now, on bp ultimate my same journeys gets me 40.2 mpg in an x7 estate 2.0 auto. 163 bhp and probably a bit heavier.

I've not done motorways on bp ultimate. But on super market stuff it did around 52-53 before shap and some roadworks dropped it to 50mpg. And that must have been cold weather.

In the winter my usual journeys drop to around 36-38

Thanks for the feed back guys, id seen reports that people get 40 plus out of it and 50 plus on the motorway.I know everyone drives different so if course there would be variations in mpg

I am always surprised what people can get out of that engine. 50+ is amazing. I was no where near that and I was using cruise control and nearly all in top gear.
If I cast my mind back I got more than 34.4 on a longer a road journey.

The engine in qprdude's car appeared in 2007. Twin turbo. I don't know what the manuals were like for fuel but I believe it's supposed to better the original. I only tried that engine in auto form and it was awesome. Smooth power delivery from idle. Don't remember wheelspinning it once. Unlike my current one.

Ah right, well this car has the 136bhp version in it, its a prefacelift car so no twin turbo there, and its a manual too

That will be variable geometry turbo. My first c5. Particulate filter needs changed/cleaned every 50000

I've got the same engine transmission and i'm getting 31mpg around London, a round trip to Peterborough and back showed an average of just over 60mpg. I reset the trip computer prior to going and drove like a grandad using hypermiling techniques but it shows what you can achieve if you try. I find the 2.2 needs to have its nuts wrung occasionaly to clear it out and drives all the better for it after an "italian tun up".

I thought it must be possible to get better than 35 put of it.I've never heard of hypermiling techniques, what the heck is that
