Strut hose repair? How easy/fail safe is this job?

Unread post by reanimation »

Hiya my mk1 is getting a little weepy again, I think previously I had chopped a section from the return hose in the front wheel arch and made it 'ok' again! It's where it fits onto the connecting pipe it's done a small split again. its a bit too late in the evening on the street to get too involved now specially as the garage has fixed wheels on with an air gun!

So options are...
1. I bought a new genuine pipe for the strut, didnt fit it as I wasn't confident, but it looks easy. Basically the bit that connects to the strut is an old TV shaped 'mouth' I presume this is held on by the tin clip holding around the strut. This clip, I do not have a new one....
Would it be messy and do I need a new clip, I presume zip ties may be a little weak??

2. Carefully pop off the hose from the pipe end and cut another 15mm off and hope it goes back on without issue.

:-s

Thank you in advance....

I fit a new clip out of habit. It's not necessary if you remove the old one gently.

What does make the job a doddle is Clic pliers, the tool that properly grips and closes the clip. I think the cheapest are about £15/pr but you will use them quite a bit.

Mark the strap location with whiteout or similar (including actual clip position) before removal. Some LHM will dribble out; it's unavoidable, so swaddle the hub carrier with rags.

When I replaced mine I didn't have the pliers, but getting the old clip off without damage is not difficult.
To get it back together is a bit harder - old clip or new - but I held the cup and clip loosely in place then put a pair of sturdy cable ties around, just above and below the clip strap and tightened these until the clip could be done up with normal pliers.

When i do the job i remove the plate from the old clip.. easyilly done once off and get a NARROW width hose clip for example one used on the air cleaner intake hose.. i then fold the small holding lugs out on the plate and fit it with the hose clip. I cant seem to get those original clips to close up. Guess i must invest in some of those clic pliers addo mentioned..

For now though above method is how ive been dooin it witbout fail..

Exactly. Having wasted lots of time in the past, struggling to remove 'Clic' fasteners, when I eventually invested in a proper pair of Clic pliers I wished I'd done so long ago. There are a few places though where replacing Clic fasteners with Jubillee clips is a good idea - the hoses onto the oil filler pot being a case in point (you have to remove the fuel filter housing to get the Clic pliers in there.

Currently I'm trying to find a slim 3/8" sq drive flexible handle at a sensible price - Elora make just what I want, but it's about £30 and I only really need it to undo the inlet manifold centre bolt.

I have fitted a couple with cable ties as I couldn't get the wretched clip to fasten - had no problems.

I've got the other ones, VS1661. Still, either does it right every time.

Thanks for all your ever useful replies. Cheers.
I had a good read on related topics and found some good tips on here from previous issues with return hoses.
I also located a brand new clip from GSF on ebay so ordered one. The proper too would be a good idea makes sense. as does the metal square part being used with a strong hose clip...
So should be fine. its just that I'm off to a distant car show next week and my Cortina not being ready, the battle bus is getting cleaned!

Starting to sound like a 5 min job with the right tools! even on the side of the road, the rag wrapping tip makes mucho sense.
I presume there will be no bleeding or anything to do after with it being a return hose... good!

I find that using the proper tools minimises the amount of lost skin (not to mention temper) :-D
