Xantia windscreen gutter drain unblock?

Post by John Plum »

What's the simple way to unblock the drain - fir leaves have blocked up?

Passenger side - got a flooded footwell last night. In torrential downpour; stripped that out to dry but mustn't happen again!
Cheers.

firstly has the plastic scuttle been off recently, if so maybe the top edge has not been re/bonded to the screen,

secondly does the car have a sun roof,

if so it might have blocked drain tubes,

@cotronut No the scuttle has not been removed since I bought her four years ago.

It's not a sunroof model.

It's a Mk2 incidentally.

There has been no sign of water ingress whatsoever previously, including last year in weeks of torrential rain.

It has Ben parked under fit trees, and a lot of needles come down on the screen

I imagine the water collects in the gutter and then drains away somewhere which remains a mystery to me - until I know where to look and how.
The gutter had filled up with water - so I believe that high water level overspilled into some inroad behind the dash.
It only leaked on the one side - toward which the car leaned on the road camber.

Yes it's intact. Not pulling away.

The collection points at the two gutter ends - head of the drain - are full of fir needles.
I just ran a test: poured lots of water into the drain head; Lo! Water rushed out fast behind the wheel at the driver side but stuck there on passenger side and filled up to overbrim, where it then spills into a 'well' under the scuttle (ie toward centre of the car) and has obviously risen there to spill into visible dashboard inlets there.

So, is it best to remove inner wheel arches to thoroughly clean that drain head out?

Done. It won't happen again
Unblocked the drain from under the bonnet using a good 18" length of 8mm flexible gas tube. Not too hard to find the drain hole, which it seems to be narrow.

Looking at the driver side, there's some windscreen washer reservoir in there. Can't easily find drain hole there - should anyone wish to know - I guess it's possible thou it doesn't seem to be in the same place as the more obvious passenger side drain hole.

Cheers for your input Superloopy.

Now I need some hot weather to speed the drying so I can reassemble the passenger seat and carpet.

I guess nobody minds a spell of sunshine? (;-
