Broke down, now will not start.

Post by Stickyfinger »

Hi Peeps

OK...broke down whilst traveling about 50 ish, no power but all electrics seemed to work. No smoke
At road side she would turn fine but not fire....waited 15 mins, started as per normal (1st crank) and drove home 5 miles.
Engine Pol fault light came on at start and stayed on. Had FULL power.

Out to start this morning, zip all, cranks fine but NO fire
De Pol fault light gone.

Nr Frome/Shepton-M UK

Any thoughts

Im in the middle of a simmilar issue with my sisters 1.6 hdi C4..

She first had an encounter at mums. Got there no issues, then she took a few more turns to start then went ok..

Worked fine - full power.. then the next day started straight away.. drove ten miles stopped then no go..

Spin engine over for ages, then suddenly start.. full power drove home no problem.

The car is now at the point it wont start at all.. I put my Lexia on and found that the fuel pressure is NOT building up enough to allow the injectors to open.

Looking on the Live Parameters, when you turn the engine over, the ECU has a fuel Pressure Reference and Fuel Measured. On mums C5 HDi 1.6 the fuel measured jumps to 200bar when turning over and its starts, but my sisters is stopping at about 100bar, which is not enough. So I have firstly assumed Fuel Rail pressure sensor being faulty. and have got one ready to go on.
Ill try do that this week.. and update accordingly. Problem? Yes, the fuel Rail is on the back of the engine behind the EGR Water Canister.. I right PITA to get at..

Of course, your symptoms sound simmilar to this, but it might not be the same issue.

Try this: I was a bit cruel to the starter, and just Spun the engine over for AGES! Risking starter over heating, but I think twice it worked I spun it over for almost a minute continuesly... but now the pressure in the fuel doesnt rise enough.

Can also be the engine bay fuse panel/relay box that's called PSF1 in the wiring schematics, or BSM in the trade.

Same advice you gave me Paul, either the sensor or the pump, in my case turned out to be the pump, started with a little difficulty when cold but once hot would not start at all. Got a pump from ebay for £55, fine now.

For the cost of it, it might be worth changing the fuel filter - it's apparently very fine, and blockages can cause fuel pressure faults.

Look up Citroën C5 BSM on Fleabay and you'll see the part I'm talking about. Common cause of a "No start" condition here.

There's only a limited number of things that'll cause sudden crank-but-no-start.

From experience just this weekend, a faulty crank sensor (or cable) will make it refuse to fire up. While the ECU logs a 'camshaft cranksaft sensor incoherence' fault it irritatingly doesn't flash anything up or beep or yield any other sign in car. Faulty camshaft sensor might cause the same.

The Lexia also revealed 0 rpm engine speed while cranking in that instance. You really need a Lexia for these situations, or find someone nearby who has one. Anything else is just guess work.

An immobiliser fault may also cause this (although ought to flash a message up), try another keyfob if you have one, or go through the BSI reset procedure?

OK...got it started.

Battery disconnect....following the process in the supersticky
Removed all intake trunking and air filter box.
Removed the electrical plug from the sensor underneath (and a bugger to find/get off) the EGR valve (don't know what its for really) but was told this has often got damaged wires/failed.
Looked all OK but sprayed it with contact cleaner.
Rebooted the system following the battery disconnect method.

Guess what....it STARTED !

So just WT-bleep was the problem :(. off to Phil Hunt/Dorset to get it on the Lexa to see tomorrow

Thanks for the help guys
