Xantia Hdi Crank Pulley Replacement

Post by rory_perrett »

I've had a bit of a chatter from the engine for a good while now and in the last week developed a noise that sounds like a poorly bearing if I go over 3000 rpm. Along with the tell tale rust coloured dust around the area of the crank pulley after 294,000 miles I guess its on its way out. Two questions, does anyone know if the the crank pulley from a 2.1td fits the Hdi? Having read the comments about cheap pulleys from eblag does anyone have a recommendation for reasonably priced quality replacement?

Different part number is listed for the 2.1, and it doesn't say double damped, so it's probably a solid one. If it's the same dia it will probably fit.

I bought one recently from AEP - it's a pukka Corteco one, and I found an online 10% discount code, so it was about £75 delivered, and it came next day.

Cheers Richard. The 2.1 is solid, it was just a throught should I need to do an emergency fix as Ive got an old 2.1 engine, I've no idea how long its going to last. I'll have a look at the AEP one, I'm still expecting to old girl to do 20,000+ miles per year so need to fit a good one. Might go for a set of spheres as well.

All my XM 2.1 crank pulleys have been dual mass, perhaps the Xantia is different.

Peter - that's interesting, I must confess I only had a quick glance at the one on my 2.1 engine and it looked different so assumed it was solid. I will have a closer look. Must be old age, but having done 2 cam belt changes on the 2.1 I can't remember what the pulley was like in detail. Thinking about it the 2.1 is probably a dual mass/ harmonic balancer type as if one engine needs one so should the other. Given that the pulleys have different part numbers 0515 J9 (2.1) and 0515 V6 (HDi) perhaps they have different charateristics to match the different engines. While I'm all for saving money where I can and its possible that if the 2.1 fits it might be OK, I really don't want to take the risk given the age and mileage of the engine.

Job done! Picked up a pulley from Eurocarparts just before they shut at 6pm, took 2 of us about 40 mins to do the job including getting everything out and put away again. I can't believe how much quieter the car is, I guess its been on the way out for a good while. Hopefully that's it for another 294,000 miles.

Stewart no its a 22mm. I also used a 15mm spanner to pull the tensioner pulley back to release the tension and get the belt off. On the Xantia removing the plastic box that contains the engine and suspension ECUs (two 10mm bolts) makes getting to the tensioner pulley much easier. Pulley bolt is tightened to 40 ftlbs and then turned a further 50 deg.

Mine too is much quieter with the pulley replaced - I also took the vac pipe off the EGR solenoid which has vastly improved the smoothness at low revs, or maybe that is to do with the pulley as well  I doubt the original has lasted nearly 300k - 100 to 150 seems to be about the limit - mine was just shy of 150k. I've got a bike pedal spanner which is nice and thin and makes getting on the aux tensioner easy (when you have removed the ECU and box.... Now I just need to fix the engine mount....
