I bought a pair of Lemforders for mine, but didn't get around to fitting either of them yet as for some reason it passed last time without a comment! I might not be so lucky this time, (tomorrow) but we'll see...(like you, I'm not going to tackle the job myself if they need doing...)

I've been extremely happy with my Taiwanese ones, bought as a "suck and see" trial. Wearing now, after two years of brutalisation.

Drop link has to come off, as it's in the way AFAIK. If the BJ is otherwise OK, it should be possible to fit a new dust shield (which you are right are now a fail if split).

The absolute first thing I do for lower front suspension work once the car is in the air and struts depressurised, is to disconnect the dogbone. It means you're not compromising your ride height.

Mike are you talking the metal heat shield, or the rubber dust boot?

The boot should fail if split, the heat shield shouldn't matter at all..,

I was talking about the rubber bit - which MOT refers to as dust cover, eg "a ball joint dust cover missing or excessively damaged, deteriorated or insecure to the extent that it would no longer prevent the ingress of dirt etc.".

Should be possible to do the boot in situ and will need less dismantling than changing the joint - although a garage with a windy gun and the right tool should be able to whizz it out.

They are sold here; generic "ball joint boots".

The dust covers are cheaply available on eBay. Robert Smart (username escapes me!) Had a link up on here a few months back.

Loads, as noted, on e-bay You need to know what size, maybe Mandrake who's got some on the shelf can measure the top and bottom diameters.... =D>

A lot easier, bearing in mind that the new boot may be an imperfect fix - make sure it's packed full of ball joint grease.
