Novel temperature sender - works by ESP?

Unread post by Old-Guy »

I started investigating the Green Lady's indigestion this afternoon, the intention to being to 'drop the sump and see what the damage is'. Hah! not only are two or three of the set-screws inaccessible until I loosened the pressure regulator (11mm a/f heads), had to get creative to get at two more behind the HP pump and one was inaccessible until I unscrewed the oil temperature sender; the connection was full of oil, but even so didn't seem to have any contacts in it. I washed out the oil, and yes, or rather NO contacts in the sender. I don't mean they've broken off, there never were any - just little bumps in the plastic moulding where the contact pins should be but that's it.

Anyone seen one like this before?

I've worked out the reason: VSXs have a different instrument cluster with an oil temperature gauge - so all XUD sumps had a hole for a temperature sender. Made production control much easier to just replace the dummy sender with a real (and more expensive) one for cars with an oil temperature gauge.
