Xsara Picasso engine choice?

Post by howiedean »

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a Xsara Picasso on my return to the UK. I've narrowed it down to either a 2004-05 2.0l HDI or a similar aged 1.6 HDI 110BHP. If I get the 2.0l I'll have it remapped. I'm thinking of the Exclusive model but my head is saying get the 2.0l HDI.

Does anyone know what the RPM at 70MPH is likely to be for both Vehicles?
What are your thoughts on either of these models?

Many thanks,

Howie

There are lots more 2.0 about than 1.6 110s - although the 1.6 90 is common after about 2004 / 5. The 2.0 is well known and pretty well bomb proof. It's a bit lacklustre in the Picasso - possibly due to a longer final drive to improve the economy. Be sprightly with a re-map though! No rev counter in the Picasso anyway, so you've no idea what it's doing  The 1.6 is basically a good engine, but does have a habit of lunching turbos if not scrupulously maintained - make sure if you buy one that it has a good service history, and if there is any doubt walk away. 110s are not that common in the Picasso, many are 90s.

If its got the 8 valve 2.0. Hdi go for that but you are at about the changeover age when the 16 valve came in. The early engine is best, less complicated, no DPF and a lot easier to work on. They all need more regular oil changes than specified, especially the 1.6 to reduce the risk of turbo problems.

Gents,
Thanks for your thoughts. I've noticed an easy way to search for the 1.6 110BHP model on Autotrader is to add Traction to the search list.
What I'm looking for is a something with a bit of power hence remaps but that will cruise nicely on the motorway.

Aside from the Xsara Picasso, I've been thinking of the Vauxhal 1.7 110 BHP ecoflex, Fiat Brava 1.6 Diesel and possibly the C4 1.6 110BHP.
These models are available in the 30 pounds tax bracket obviously the Picasso being a bit more!

Regards,

Howie

I have two 2.0. 110hp cars and they have plenty of power for me, but then I drive like a granddad but I can get in excess of 60mpg from the C5 and 406. The C5 has an engine light on and has been in slow mode for several days, I only noticed it yesterday when I was going up a steep hill. I did all my boy racing many years ago.

I would think you would be better off with a chipped 110 than a 16 valve, they seem a very reliable engine, mine have done 194,000 and 215,000 miles respectively

Your thinking the same as me. The funny think is with my C5 I tend to stick to speed limits now using the cruise control however there is plenty of power available if I want to overtake quickly. The remap on the C5 makes the car much more drivable, this is what I'm looking to get with a 2nd car.
Its just a shame that there was never a 6 speed gearbox for the Picasso.

Sadly I'm back in the States at the moment and stuck with my huge Yank Tank Crown Vic, which is longer than a C5 estate!

Id go for the 2.0 over the 1.6 any day of the week, more for reliability & easier to work on.
The 2.0 hdi was never available as a 110bhp in the picasso (well not in the UK anyway). All the 2.0's were 90bhp's with Bosch injection systems. None of them had FAP/DPF either.
