CHANGED: C4 HDi non start.. Help or advice needed....

Having just giving up on plug removal for now.. I had further thoughts on this, people below sugested plugs or not it should still start and run plugs good or not..

So, having a think about this.. there must be an electrical problem.. So I hooked up my Lexia on the car.

Then went into parameter measurements...

The Cam and Crank ARE Syncronising so that confirms those sensors are working.. HOWEVER, I noticed the Fuel Pressure Ref is 305 Bar CRANKING, yet the Fuel Pressure Measured was struggleing 105bar...

Am I correct in thinking the fuel pressure at cranking should match the fuel pressure Reference before she will fire??

I know the 8v HDI inside out, but the DV6 being a bit newer Im not 100% sure. I guess I should check on my car to see how that works...

Anyone here with a 1.6 HDi .. wait a min, my parents, DOH.. so I can see what their C5 does..

They will normally start and run quite happily without the glow plugs Paul - unless you live in Siberia. My starting problem on the 2.0.Hdi was the HP pump, would eventually start when cold but almost impossible when hot.

Oh, what a bugger! Can't help with an extractor, but will ask my tame mek-a-nik in the morning. I know he has to deal with such problems with various engines - I have a nasty feeling the successful solution in the end is usually Head Off and send to local machine shop (but that might be un-extractable injectors.

At the risk of teaching granny.... The usual advice is to run the engine to get the head hot, pour coke (cola) around the joints and leave overnight. Next morning blow away any coke residues, get the engine hot again and put some PlusGas on the joints, leave to soak until after lunch, Get the engine hot for a 3rd time before trying to extract glow-plugs or injectors. Of course this assumes the engine can be persuaded to start!

Engine WONT RUN OR START .... IM NOT SURE BUT I THINK these 1.6 dv6 psa/ford engines must some sort of disable starting function on them if the heaters are dead to protect the cat.

I KNOW A DERV should run without heaters but this is NOT a psa dw 8 engine at all nothing like it..

Oh also.. just to clarify whats happend here the threaded parts have all unscrewed and come out.. what has happened is the HEATED ELEMENT ON THE ENDS OF THE PLUGS HAVE BROKE OFF DUE TO too much soot on them...

I read some stuff about this Paul - suggesting seemed the be to crank the engine to see if that would eject the broken off bit. Otherwise, I think it is going to be head off time Ours is reporting a glow plug fault, but I can't imagine how you change them on C4 Picasso without taking the engine out.... not sure on the non-start issue, you need to get the plugs fixed first! Might be worth PMing Lighty - he has much more 1.6 experience than anyone else.

Well thats an interesting read, so, If I get the engine on BDC on the appropiate heater plug - soak it then spin the engine, the hopefull result is that it will SHOOT the tip out of the engine..

Paul, sorry I misunderstood your predicament - I was going to tell you that the going rate for removing snapped off glow-plugs and Heli-coiling the hole is about £200 (each!).

As far as removing the snapped off tip, I think the chances of blasting a broken-off tip (once it's dropped inside) out through the injector hole are rather slim. IMHO the most likely outcome is that it goes into the bore (assuming indirect injection) and gets between piston and head with expensive consequences.

Fishing for it with a magnetic through the injector hole has to be worth a try as does the use of Wynns EGR Cleaner for Diesels to ease the removal of the injector.

Must now go and make myself a Xac sphere remover - bust my 'heavy duty' chain wrench using my new (longer) breaker bar.

If you haven't got the bits to make the Xac style sphere remover yet I've got the length of studding and the nuts in my garage. If you want it you're welcome to it. I think we share the same small area of Gloucestershire.

MJM, that's a very kind offer but I've got a 2 metre length of M10 studding and couple of 4' lengths of heavy duty box section about 1½" x ¾". The box sections were saved several years ago on the "might come in handy one day" principle - now they have!

That should be strong enough to hold the sphere still and rotate the car!

This engine seems to be really common for this, i have had trouble in the past getting these out but fortunitely never had one break in the head, its the same scenario. The plug comes out of the thread no problem but it wont pull out, i normally clamp a set of small vice grips onto it & just keep twisting it back & forward while pulling outwards at the same time & dousing with wd40. Some of them i have removed have been slightly bannana shaped on the heater part. I dont belive the engine has any strategy that stops the engine starting if the glow plugs have failed. I have changed them in the past mainly for anti pollution warning messages. As already said it needs to be very cold for this engine to need glow plugs for starting, their main purpouse on this engine is for post heating to get the engine warm faster after the engine starts.
I think your only option here is head off, you have no chance of getting it out by turning the engine.
