Engine swapping

Unread post by oilyspanner »

Hello fellow Citroen victims I am considering the feasibility of fitting a late peugeot 1.9 td into a (yet to be sourced) 16v BX GTI
my problem is driving an lhm pump, Can anyone tell me whether the 16 valve bracket carrying the pump/alternator etc will fit the diesel block? also whether to use the GTI gearbox?

I don't think the XUD will be very happy screaming along at 6000 rpm!
The diesel has completely different torque characteristics (max torque at approx 2000 revs as apposed to 6000) than the GTI so I think you will have to change the box as well.

Stewart -
The points on the box mentioned by NiSk also applies for the HP pump. The 16V pump is geared for high engine rev's - as the diesel pump is geared to high output at lower engine rev's. Apart from that my guess is that the pump & bracket would fit - as both mentioned engine types have the HP pump fitted on the box.

The 16 valve unit is a screamer and is geared at about 20 mph per 1000 revs in 5th. The TD is geared about 26 1/2 mph in 5th. Use a 16 valve gearbox and while the thing may be a great sprinter (it may not as the turbo may never get going properly on acceleration) you will have a max speed of about 86 mph which will equate to driving a proper TD in 4th.
Why not use all TD gear and the TD pump. I think Anders did some research into pump drives and came to the conclusion thet that 16 valve pump actually ran faster than all the rest due to relative pulley sizes.

I'm with Jeremy on this one.
Best plan would be able to obtain a BX D/TD HP pump and the bracket that secures it to the gearbox. Use a TD gearbox!

i really dont understand why anybody would want to put a td engine into a 16v? i dont think you could ruin one in a more spectacular way!
why not kit a td one up to look like a 16v?
yet to be sourced! you better not wreck a good un! lol

I think that the xantia hydraulic pumps are all the same. They simply have different size pullies to increase / decrease the pumping rate depending on the engine characterists. That is my observation from the several pumps I have sculling around my garage.

Dave - we're talking BX here [:D]
- not quite the same HP pump world [8D]
