xantia 1.9td vsx Hot oil temp !!!

what temp should the gauge be reading while driving under normal load ?
we have replaced the head gasket however the oil gage is sitting at the 2 o clock position !!!
could the oil cooler be the problem
anyone help me please ?

My 97 1.9TD VSX (26000 miles)which I have owned from new shows the oil temperature at around 90 degrees. It will rise from that if I'm on a motorway at 80+ climbing uphill etc, then reduce when downhill or if in traffic. Incidently a 93 TD VSX which I have just sold would struggle to reach beyond 60 degrees even in the recent hot spell. My 98 2.0 turbo petrol is similiarly showing a rather low oil temperature of 60. Generally once the engine is properly warmed up (in excess of 5 miles I would expect an oil temperature of at least 60 degrees) It would appear that the senders/gauge are not that accurate.
Similarly people assume that the rev counter is more accurate than the speedo, however as someone who owns a Sun diagnostic engine tuner, rev counters are also pretty inaccurate.

Have just been out for a spin the water temparature was at its normal position but the oil gauge goes right up to 120+ degrees
obviously thats not correct !
it appears that the oil cooler is flowing correctlythe temparature in is the same out
any thoughts please ?

I can get my BX Turbo oil temp up to 80 or 90 degrees in normal A road motoring in summer, If on the motorway I cruise at 80-90 I can see 120 to 130 degrees, if I reduce speed to 70ish it comes back down to around 90 degrees albeit slowly

Alan,
Is the oil really that hot? Take the car for an run and then put your hand on the sump - it should be just about hot enough so you can't hold your hand on it. If it's scorching then you might have a problem. I doubt the oil cooler does much in the UK unless you do a lot of heavy towing. My money is on the sensor or gauge having gone belly up - what does the water temp gauge read? Why did you replace the HG - hopefully not just because the oil temp was reading high[?][}:)]

This cars been a nightmare we first aquired the car as a non runner with a broken upper engine mount !
we replaced the mount and the cambelt only to find that the head gasket was gone so (pressurising
we did notsuspect the gauge or sensor as faulty cause of the head however with the head gasket replaced
the oil temp is still higher than is acceptable for normal driving however since our 1st post here we have used a laser thermoter
to take readings from various relavant points and cannot get near 120 deg's so i think your right i have access to a spare sensor so im gonna try that (£30) as im gonna use the car for towing my caravan i dont want the problem to arrise when were towing so im being SAFE !!(I personally only deal with the hydraulics/ECU stuff at our Firm ! )
