door hinge loose when closed??

Post by Timmo »

hi guys, please excuse the title, its the best my noggin could get to this morning,
funny issue with the passenger door on the Xant, when its closed there is movement in the pins in the hinges allowing the door to drop slightly, but as soon as its open more than a couple of inches its fine, no play at all, annoying me a little now as it does give a clunky/boof as it closes and opens,

is it a simple case of replacing the hinge pins?? or is it something slightly more involving and thus more french!!

many thanks in advance,

Timmo.

It's more likely the hinge is coming away. Best to check carefully ASAP.

Assuming your problem isn't the usual Xantia problem of the hinge weld breaking at the A post.

It's not uncommon on old cars. The usual arrangement is that the pins are a drive fit in one half of the hinge (pillar usually) and free in the other (door) half. With lack of lubrication, the bare (wearing) surfaces rust on pins and hinges. The more the hinge/pin rattle, the more they wear/rust - inevitably in the closed position. The situation can be improved by fitting new pins (removes half the wear) and greasing the hinges.

I found pins on ebay, then got the door welded, the split was invisible until it got really bad,, but easy to weld once the wing was off.
